International pet transport — Brooklynian

International pet transport

Has anyone used one of those services that handle international pet moves? I'm moving to Hong Kong at the end of this month and would like to take my kitteh with if possible, but I can't just take him on the plane with me -- there are regulations and paperwork and suchlike, plus my employer is putting me up in a hotel for the first month until I can find an apartment. So I figure he can stay with his other daddy, who's moving to a new place in Brooklyn, until it's time for kitteh to come join me.

Anyway, if you've used one of those companies, please share:
- Name of company
- Your experience with it (how well they handled things, did they seem to really care for your pet, how well pet came through the move, etc.)
- Cost
- What aspects of the move they handled or helped with (paperwork, vet exams, etc.)

Thanks!

  • In late 2004 I moved myself and two cats from Australia to New York. I used Crown International for the whole move, however, they sub-contracted the moving of the cats to an Australian company named JetPets. The whole thing was painless and cost about AUD2000. I had to take the cats to the vet in Australia to get the correct microchip (there are at least 3 formats, my cats each have three microchips), and a rabies vaccination, while I was there the vet filled in the appropriate Australian Quarantine Inspection Service form. JetPets picked up the cats from my apartment in Melbourne and took them to a boarding facility where they stayed for six weeks, they then flew United to LA, were rested for the remainder of the day, and put on the red eye to JFK. They were delivered to my NY apartment safe and sound.

You'll need to check Hong Kong's quarantine requirements. If HK is rabies free, you may find that your cat not only needs a vaccine but a blood test to show that the vaccine is effective. The whole process can take six months or more.

If you do a google search on Jet Pets, you'll find the Australian website, if you e-mail them, they may provide their US contacts.
  • Thanks - I'll check them out.
