Jobs in Park Slope

Hello all,

My roommate's brother recently moved to Park Slope last summer. In such a short span, he has already found himself among the unemployed multitudes. Seeing as how I don't want to hear anymore arguments between my roommate and his brother about him getting a job, I was curious to know if anyone knew of any places hiring in the slope.

He's college educated (artside degree, can't remember in what) and he's a strong lad so he could do manual work labor. Retail would be great as well.

I can't choose any of these - I know a lot of people who work in the financial services industry (middle/back office types who earn a good living, but don't make buckets of money) who could be unemployed for much longer than 6 months but they are not bums.

I haven't strolled the retail avenues of Park Slope so I didn't have any suggestions off the top of my head.

Aren't any of the stores on 7th hiring?

I've seen a few hiring signs while walking around the slope- tell him to walk the lengths of 5th and 7th aves. Something part-time is better than nothing! Also, check craigslist "gigs" section- when I was strapped for cash I did some odd jobs off there (handing out flyers, working a coat check for a private party, etc) Its not a fulltime job, but you can make a few hundred bucks a month doing stuff off there.

In a market like this, temp jobs will be scarce. I went through this in 2003. There was NOTHING out there. I was unemployed for 18 months, and it was terrifying. I am still paying off the credit card debt I racked up on just basic living expenses.

That said, I had to start my own business because it was the only way to work. Now I'm fairly recession-proof in that no one can lay me off. And luckily, what I do involves advising companies on cost-savings. All of which is to say, things may look bleak for your roomie's bro right now, but this is a great time for him to figure out how to make himself indispensable.

I'm thinking it's more about how you spend your time. If you're unemployeed for a month and spend each day drunk in the gutter/subway/wherever, and you smell really bad... bum.

but if you're just out of a job because the economy sucks (and you smell gooood) then you're just unfortunate

I know you're probably kidding, but when the economy has been losing more than half a million jobs a month, and Nobel winning economists like Paul Krugman are talking about being scared by the economic #'s that are coming out (still not entirely sure what all those numbers are), this is a bit of a jerky poll to put up. There are a lot of other folks in a similar position as your friend, and likely to be more.

I'd recommend to your friend that he not be too prideful about that jobs he takes, as much as it might suck to do so. Since he wasn't laid off, he doesn't have access to unemployment, so he's going to have to just suck it up, unless he doesn't want to move home with the 'rents.

When I got laid off in November 2001, I decided to hide in school for a while, and got lucky by finding some work doing construction for 6 months until school started. For someone who'd been in the tech sector, all I could do was work as a general laborer. Wont make you great $$ (in Boston, I was getting $12/hour, not sure what it'd be in NYC), but it definitely helped augment my unemployment.

I know Lowe's was hiring part time recently.
He can also check out some of the local parents boards (i.e., PHParents PS Parents) there are always parents looking for someone to pick up kids from school or babysit part-time.
Then there is dog walking, etc.
He can put an ad in the classifieds here for a "guy" friday type thing.
I have a neighbor who makes $70 a week moving everyone's cars for alternate parking.
He just may have better luck having a bunch of small part time gigs than finding something full time in this neighborhood.

getting part time work is great if you can. WhenI was laid off in '02 by working part time I was able to get unemployment for over 1 1/2 years. My part time work decreased my unemployment for that week but I collect for 1 year and by then I'd made enough part time to qualify for a new claim to start a second year of unemployment

Subject: Still no work

The bar i was working at as a bartender for two and a half years closed down three weeks ago - and i've looked EVERYWHERE for a job. I really wanted to work local in the Slope and didn't find a thing - Manhattan is just as bad. Though i do wonder whether you need to have a friend to give you an 'in' down the Slope?!?

So good luck to all you non-fununemployed people, and if you hear of anyone who needs a bartender, with an accent, who makes great drinks - let me know.

Times are tough...looks like there might be another extension of benefits though so at least folks got that going for them.

I saw Tracy Morgan perform last night. He was hecka funny.
