something new coming to that tiny spot on 16th st — Brooklynian

something new coming to that tiny spot on 16th st

i saw that tiny space on 16th st right around the corner from 9th ave (behind the 24 hour deli) has a new business of mediterranean food coming soon. they built a little wooden porch outside and put some plastic walls around it. it looks nice but i wonder how much it will really help. thats just such a weird place for a business. i’ve seen so many different businesses come and go in that space for years and nothing there seems to get a lot of customers or last more than a year. so i'll be curious if that little wooden porch makes any difference

  • I didn't realize the other place was gone.

Somebody needs to put a salad place in there. No food to cook, just a person behind the counter to throw in my artichoke hearts, croutons, blue cheese crumbles, tomatoes, cukes and balsamic vinagrette.

    A girl can dream!
  • i think the philippine take out place has been gone since the summer. i think it was only there about a year. i remember when they were handing out all the flyers for it.

that space is actually where universal video first opened in the 1980‘s. they were only there about a year before moving to the bigger space across the street where they were until the end. but for the brief time they were there lots of people would come in and their about the only business i can recall that seemed to do well in that space. after universal moved across the street i remember they briefly tried making that space a store that sold nothing but magazines but it didn’t last. their magazine selection wasn’t any better than jimmy’s at the stationary across the street or krupa‘s grocery. i also remember they tried opening a little barber shop there but it didn‘t last very long. besides that i think it’s just been all different kinds of food there over the years
  • how the heck did Universal Video operate out of that space? it's teeny tiny!
  • it was pretty tiny. i think the counter was a little further back then it is now but it was still really tight. believe it or not they also managed to squeeze one video arcade game in there because they were so popular back then. i think they basically only had new releases for their movie selection. the owner just sat behind the counter on a spin around desk chair and when you handed him the box for a movie he’d just spin back to match it with the actual video tape

the owner was related to the owner of the 24 hour deli. they use to have it so when you wanted to return videos to the video store but they were closed, you could just return them to the deli. my guess would be that the universal owner just asked his cousin “i want to open a video store but can’t afford to right now, so can i just convert your deli’s back closet into a video store?” i don't think there was any store there before universal
  • That is so bizarre.
  • I doubt a wooden porch would help in the winter, but if the place is nice, it might stick around.
  • it sounds bizarre but he did better than anyone else in that tiny spot, and did great in the bigger space for so many years

  • When I first moved here from Detroit and saw that phillipino place in that tiny area I thought "Wow, things sure are great here if a place like that is in business!"

  • If the guy would just DELIVER as promised, I think they would be in business. You have a take out joint that won't deliver more than 4 blocks away. And then he got the orders wrong A LOT. I wanted them to succeed, but you have to build upon your customer base. I never could really say positive things because EVERY SINGLE time I wanted to order take out.....they either didn't answer the phone or they weren't delivering that night. Just me....I don't want to stand outside in the cold waiting to for takeout food.

I wonder if Sim Sim delivers?

It can't be that unlucky of a space, since that guy Michael started Universal Video there and then proceeded to become a freaking millionaire from it.
  • And the 16th St. Gourmet mediterranean owners expanded to open Fez on PPW, so, for some, it seems to function more as a stepping stone.

Not sure if the Sariwa owners have moved on to bigger and better, but my Filipino roommate was not impressed with their food.
  • WWelcome to the boards greensneaks.
  • I think a good Ramen noodle shop would be great there

well isn't that what the new porch if for? they have plastic around it so i would imagine its to keep customers warm while waiting

agreed. i was so disappointed when i tried them. i love filipino food and this place cut many, many corners.
  • well they finally opened. that flashing “open” light is obnoxious. i wish them luck though
