STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The College of Staten Island has stepped up security after a scrawled threat was found on the Willowbrook campus vowing to "shoot up this school" on Monday.

An English professor discovered the menacing message last week penciled on a bathroom stall.

CSI attempted to alert staff and students via e-mail that security will be heightened. However, the e-mail system designed to warn the school's 13,000 students didn't work Wednesday because of an in-house computer glitch.

CSI spokesman Ken Bach said the problem had been corrected by yesterday evening and the college continues to take appropriate measures.

"Although it [the threat] was unsubstantiated and anonymous, we're going to respond," Bach said. "We're increasing security, especially around where it was found."

Some students said they were contemplating staying home Monday, just in case.

"You can't just brush it off," said senior Peter Matheos, 21, of Brooklyn. "There's a lot of sick things that go on out there. I don't know if my business class is worth it."

The college chose not to activate a text-alert program put in place after a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007 because the system is reserved for immediate emergencies or closings.

That didn't sit well with freshman Zane Farley of Westerleigh, who hadn't heard of the threat by yesterday afternoon, a week after it was discovered.

"Isn't that something you think I should get an alert on?" asked the 20-year-old psychology major. "Even if it's not substantiated, you have to take steps to protect students."

The NYPD is investigating the graffito, which according to the college threatened to "shoot up this school on 12-15," but as of yesterday security on the campus was being left to the college.

Freshman Donna Mahler, 19, of Port Richmond, shrugged when she heard about the scrawl.

"This is New York," she said. "It's not going to stop me from living my life."

Bach said security agents will be checking IDs for the rest of the semester, which ends Dec. 23. Threats like the one discovered last week are a rarity at the campus, one of the safest in the CUNY system.

Suspicious activity should be reported to security at 718-982-2111.

Suzie - Thanks so much for the CSI info....My step-daughter goes to CSI part time (she is 21)... Her father is in SI right now visiting because his son is on leave from the Marines.... I just called to let them know in case the kids did not hear anything... OMG, these school shootings make me crazy!!!
