Subject: New York's Strongest Beer

I don't have a digi or cell camera but someone's gotta post a pic of the ad in that shop window near the SW corner of Washington, and I think, Pacific. It proudly, baldly states "Grand 9.5, New York's Strongest Beer, 99c". That's not 9.5 ounces people! Now that's proper drinking. Respect.

    I've had a stout that was brewed to 17%. Tasted like hotbuttered shit. But you knew you were drinking alcohol. You knew it.

    So... Now we need to start a gallery of interesting bodega beer ads.

    My favorite bodega beer ad, right now, is that one with the hoochie mama holding the beer can... OK, they all have that... but on this one, the advertising tagline is "HOLD IT DOWN."

    Huh?? As in, "I can't ..."? It's like she's challenging your inner binge drinker to slam another 99-cent can of swill - WITHOUT vomiting. Come on, HOLD IT DOWN!

    Is it legal to advertise the strength of your beer? Apparently so, unless someone complains. In the famous 1991 "Colt 45 PowerMaster" case, ATF actually let Heileman Brewing use the "PowerMaster" brand, and only demanded the name change after protests from a group representing religious/inner-city/minority interests:

    Good one. My dad, executive at large shitty beer company based in Milwaukee, was so pissed back in the day about this. I think, and don't get me down on this, the way it worked out was that you could state the alcohol content but not market the beer as being more powerful than other beers. There was a geographic scope in this this as well. National brands couldn't do it, but a limited distribution beer could or something like that.

    Ooops. ASS is starting. Need to move the car.

    Bad beer is not a bargain at any price. Exhibit A: PBR. No amount of irony can get me to drink that.
    What!? Personally, I think PBR is delicious. It's smooth enough to be slammable, but if you want to take it slow and savor the taste, you will be rewarded in that endeavor as well.

    Speaking of good cheap beer, I picked up a cold 6 of Schlitz the other day at the Met on Vanderbilt. They've really got an interesting mish-mash of beers there, don't they?

    Dan, I like you. You drink like I do. And yes, they do have a great, if not random, supply of cheap delicious treats. Allthough lately, the Key Foods on Flatbush has regularly had 12-packs of PBR and Schaeffer for $6.49, which is totally ruling me.

    True, the Dog has a wicked bite and can actually go up to above 23% depending on the vintage. But you're only gonna be able to drink one or two of them. And it costs a pretty penny. At least in the acohol/$ ratio I'm giving the title to Grand 9.5. The beer for the common sot.
