Cattyshack ... what happened?
I am working on texting the owner (charging my US phone) but what the hell is going on? I hear they got shut down for no good reason. I also hear there is a silent partner trying to sell out the space or something like that, but details are not immediately available to me.
Anyone have info, beyond the usual boy-type complaints re: butch ladies?

good group of ladies, the ones I know, but my understanding currently, based on this email (follows) is that something went terribly wrong with another partner.
WRT to what I am quoting below -- I do NOT believe that Brooke has a problem with straight men. if she did, she would not have had weekly poker nights that welcomed gay and straight men and women to play. so, sexuality is not the issue per se. however. I do not know the intimate details of the issues within the business and the sexual politics involved. there may be an issue of "hetero knows better than gay" involved or something else. I have zero clue. when I get back to the flat in quito where I am crashing I will give Brooke a call and primarily offer friendly support, but also see what I can figure out. if I learn something non-confidential that she is okay with me sharing, I will.

I'm really not shocked that gender bias has entered this discussion on either side.
Cattyshack is flawed. It is a hetro disliking group. The place isn't welcoming... these are facts.
When you operate a business and decide that you're schtick is to alienate the majority of your potential clientèle you know good things aren't going to happen.
Furthermore, Cattyshack operates in a niche that notoriously runs hot and cold. That is to say the hip place in 2008 almost, by definition, cannot be the hip place in 2009. Gingers does it right by keeping it real, being nice, and not relying on the hip factor.
Now, I know there will be those who say that Cattyshack still brings them in... however, if that place doesn't start "packing" them in the way they did 3 and 4 years ago then, obviously, the owners are going to start asking questions. The place is huge, the rent is sky high, and we aren't living in the headiest of times. Oh, and Jan. and Feb are the worst months for bars... we are talking like 30% - 80% LESS income than, say the month of June.
Finally, and this is pure speculation... but, as the money dries up so does the ability to pay off cops. Don't look at me - I didn't invent the idea. You want to break the law with late nights, noise and rampant cocaine use then somebody had better pay the piper.
Is anyone really that surprised? Maybe next time I go...instead of paying the $5, $7, $10 cover charge and then $9 for a drink.... maybe I'll just chop of my nuts, put them in a little baggie, label it "I'm sorry for ever owning these - I don't need them anymore" and see if that satisfies the disgruntled, man hating bouncer and/or bartender. -

I've found Cattyshack to be perfectly friendly, and I've spent a lot more time there over the last year than the average straight guy. I've made a bunch of friends that I hang out with regularly, love the bartenders etc.
I've felt some reservation on people's parts from time to time. But that's pretty understandable isn't it?
Regarding the $, I know things have been slow. They started shutting down Mon-Wed a while back so I guess it hasn't been great. However aren't a lot of places suffering in this economy?
