Laundry Services? WashFold + Laundromat? — Brooklynian

Laundry Services? WashFold + Laundromat?

intersloper
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I'm new to the area and took my laundry into the "Launder Center" this morning at 8th St. and 7th Ave. The proprietress was SMOKING inside and I was appalled. It didn't even smell clean and nice in there.

Are there any GOOD pickup/delivery services for wash and fold in PS? And are there any good laundromats with clean, affordable machines around the 8th St/7th Ave neighborhood?

Comments

  • Sorry too lazy to know any good laundromats with good machines. The place I drop off my laundry is Four Seasons on 1st St. and 6th Ave. They do a good job and are fairly quick. Just don't get any tailoring done there!
  • I drop off my laundry at the laundromat on Union St, across from the Co-Op. They do a great job. I don't think they do drop-off/pick-up, though.

As an aside, has anyone ever used the place on 7th ave, between Union and Presidednt? It's the one right next to Regina's Bakery, called San Toy Laundry. I had used them when I first moved to the neighborhood, but my clothes never came back smelling very fresh. Dirt that was on the clothes when they were dropped off was still there when I picked them up. They felt stiff, like they had been air dried rather than run through the dryer.

One day, I found out what the problem was. I arrived at the store to drop my laundry off and waited my turn behind another customer ahead of me. I swear the guy behind the counter asked if the customer wanted them to use soap or not. Something I had never asked, not had I ever even thought it within the realm of questions one would be asked at a laundromat. Soap? Of course. I'd like you to use water, too. And while you're at it, use heat the dry the clothes.

After hearing that, it all made sense. Of course clothes won't smell fresh, won't get clean, and will feel like they're slowly turning into sandpaper if YOU DON'T USE SOAP to clean them. I left the store, and brought the laundry down to the place on Union St, mentioned above. When the clothes came back, it was like a revelation - they were clean! whites were bright! they smelled clean! soft! stains - gone!

For the next few weeks, everytime my girlfriend and I went to drop off our clothes, we would smile at the sight of SOAP on top of the laundry machines, at the SUDS sloshing around in the washers, the smell of BLEACH wafting through the air.

Anyway, this has scared me off of any laundromat that doesn't actually have washing machines in the store. One more thing to be snobbish about!
  • I used to live across the street from the place on 7th and 13th, I think it's called Apple laundry or something like that. They were the best of the ones in that immediate area. Not sure if they do pickup and delivery or if it's too far of a walk from where you are but you may want to check them out.
  • Yes, New Apple on 7th Ave. between 13th & 14th. I've been taking my laundry there for a month and I really like them. I went to pick up my laundry tonight and they had taken the initiative to air-dry my daughter's jacket because they thought it wouldn't do well in a hot dryer -- which is a level of care and attention that was unexpected and much appreciated. They are nice people. (And they definitely use soap!)
  • I use the one on 9th st. and 8th avenue, but our business dealings might be at an end. If they're using soap, it ain't much, I'll tell you that.

I'm certain all this laundry gets sent to the same place no matter where you drop it off. The person above is correct, you wanna see a washing machine on premisis.

I use the drop-off/pick up sevice on 8th Ave. and 13th Street. Forgot the name, but they do a good job, are nice people and you can pet their gorgeous Golden Retreiver (Deborah) while you're there.
  • Apple Laundry on 13th Street and 7th Avenue does pick up and delivery and they do a great job:

  • I have been trying to call Apple Laundry for the last half hour-no answer. I think they are closed on Wednesdays-is there someplace else that does pick up and delivery and does a good job?
  • Yes, they are closed every Wednesday. I don't know what else to recommend -- I think New Apple is so much better than the two other laundromats near me.
  • Apple rocks, I used to live down the street, best laundromat I've ever used hands down. I live on 7th and 3rd, the place next to Cocoa is sad and overpriced. I've resigned myself to using my dry cleaners around the corner who send laundry out. Very good work, but very slow turnaround time.

BTW, does anyone find the idea of the coinwash.com site really really funny? I'm sure it could be useful, but I just don't see it happening.

Anyone know how the logistics of this works? Do they pick it up at a predesignated time? Do you tip them when they pick it up or bring it back? How much? Does the delivery cost extra? Is it same day?

Any responses from someone who uses this service are appreciated. Thx.

call them and they usually are they within the hour. sometimes it takes longer. no predesignated time, accept usually when they deliver on Sunday night it comes after 7. i tip them when they deliver. i dont think deliver costs extra, as i honestly dont even know the rates, i just pay. seems reasonable. it's same day if they pick it up in the morning and it's not too much.
  • I like the one on 13th & 8 ave. But some of them couldn'y speak or understand English (the young Burma lady). They do good on wash and fold and remember my specific instruction quiet well. They do deliver and pick-up with no charge but I tip them $2 for that. The young guy, Steven, doesn't look like he understand you but he does..he's a bit off but funny. Here is their number 718 499 8293.
  • Apple on 7th Avenue and 13th Street is the best. We have used them on and off for years and they do a good job and pay attention to special instructions (cold water, hot water, no drier, etc.). Good prices.

They will pick up and deliver anytime during their business hours and will usually come get your clothes within an hour (at the most, usually much sooner) after you call them. If they pick up before noon, you can have your clothes back the same day. I am not sure what their per pound price is, but they are very reasonable.

I live about 14 blocks away from them and they come to me without any problem.

Looks like I'll be giving it a try. Thanks for the responses.
  • About how much does it cost for a bag of laundry?
  • Laundry is sort of the bane of my existence. I've never had it "done" by anyone but me, primarily because about half of my stuff needs to be air dried (dryers kill fabric, especially high tech stuff like athletic gear).

As chores go, I didn't mind doing laundry when I had access to machines on-site, but now that I have to haul it to the 'mat and pace around while it washes and dries, I find I practically construct my entire weekend around this mundane activity. Will any of these places line dry designated items? I don't mind dropping it off myself as long as I can garauntee my running tights won't come unraveled after three washes....
  • Subject: laundry.bz anyone?

I just moved to the area - has anyone tried this service?
  • There's a laundromat on 5th Avenue around 21st or 22nd, if you're that far out, that does pick-up and delivery with a one-day turnaround. I can't remember the name, because it's been a couple of years now, but I used to use them when I lived on 22nd Street and later 10th Street, and they were really reliable, cheap, good about special instructions (don't dry the items in this plastic bag, that kind of thing), never lost anything, and did a really nice job of folding everything. If you have a hallway that's secure enough to leave the bag out in it for them, you can leave a key the building with them and they'll pick up and deliver even when you're not home. It was a family-owned business and I never had any problems with them. I think they have a pretty big service area too.

LostinGreenwoodHeights, maybe you know the place I'm talking about?
  • I use San Toy on 7th and Union (on 7th). two chinese guys; my roommate asked them their names once and one says something, in broken english, like "i'm jim and that's steve" and then steve says "i'm not steve, i'm dave" and after that i'd never dream of going anywhere else. cheap too
  • I'm on Union between 3rd and Nevins - a little off the beaten path, and it seemed the cleanest place to go was on 5th and 3rd - Kleen Machine or something.
But after the was I was treated there, I will never go back. I went right after Christmas and apparently the person who used some machines before me had dragged in a bunch of pine needles all over the floor. Well, the owner comes over to me and immediately accuses me - "Hey is this you that dragged all this stuff into my place?, and he continued on and on." And I immediately put him in his place and told him he didn't have to be so rude to me, and that I didn't celebrate Christmas nor did I have a Christmas tree! Then he proceeded to start mopping and sweeping around me and my cart. If I hadn't already started my washes I would have left there immediately!
