CHILE

Most of Chile's vines are ungrafted, which is unusual in the wine world. A

tiny bug known as phylloxera thrives on the roots of vitis vinifera
grapevines worldwide, damaging the vines and forcing most vineyards to
graft the vines onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock.

In Chile, however, the Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean
and the Atacama Desert to the west provide a solid barrier to keep
phylloxera out of the vineyards. (Phylloxera can't survive in high
altitudes or in sandy soils.)

Because Chilean grapevines are ungrafted, they have better sap flow and
live much longer. See what a wine tastes like from ungrafted vines from
Chile's many wine-growing regions.
