Where is Park Slope/Prospect Heights can I get a great steak that isn't $30 for just the steak?

  • Moutarde
    Fifth and Carroll
  • I looked this place up on citysearch and it got horrible reviews for service. Do you think it has improved?

I've only been there once, and it was for lunch, but the service was fine.
  • Thanks! I will give it a try!

Good luck - hopefully the service has improved since I was there last about 6 months ago.
  • Steak frites at Belleville, 5th ave and 5th. Great value for lunch, pretty sure it's well under $30 at dinner as well.

fwiw, I haven't been that impressed with Moutarde -- but have visited Belleville more often & more recently so maybe Moutarde has improved.
  • Moutard - I've never had the steak, but I've never had a problem with the service, either. It's fine.
  • The steak at moutarde is great, also they have a steak with peppercorn at 12th street that's fantastic.
  • I've been to Moutarde many times and never had a problem with the service, or the food -- love their food.

I had a very spooky experience at Moutarde once. I was in their ladies' room, which is on the basement level below the dining room. While I was washing my hands, I could very clearly hear a woman moaning right outside the bathroom door. I was thinking, Yikes, someone is about to lose their dinner. So I hurriedly finished my hand-washing and drying, skipped the lipstick application and opened the door to let the person in . . . but there was no one there. (and no, the person had not gone into the men's room). It was spooky. But I still like Moutarde.
  • I am trying to keep this place a secret. But if you want a basic steak dinner you can try Snooky's on 7th. Snooky's itswhat Park Slope used to be. The service is great, the beers are cheap, the wine is bad but the steak special is good. 200 Fifth also has decent steaks, but it can be a bit loud.
  • 12th Street Grill on 12th and 8th Avenue has a great steak, and I am picky about steaks I don't cook myself. Comes with great onion rings -- can't remember if there's a veggie.
  • Subject: Steak

The poster above is right - 12th Street has a dee-lish steak with potatoes and onions. Comes with sauteed spinah too and is under $20.
  • Have never had the steak but will second that 12th Street is an undersung restaurant.
  • Is 12th St the place that used to be Aunt Sonja's?
  • pitu wrote: Is 12th St the place that used to be Aunt Sonja's?
    yes
  • Subject: Steak-Filet Mignon

Melt on Bergen between 5th Avenue and Flatbush has the best Filet Mignon I've had in New York. I think it's somewhere around $25 with sides.
  • I had the hanger steak at Blue Riboon last night. Came with mushrooms and onion rings. Savory and wonderful. As much as I love Beast, Blue Ribbon's hanger steak was better. About $25 - Beast was around $18.
  • Long Tan has a steak bar special now -- weird for a pan-Asian place. It's something crazy, like $10 for steak, mashed potato and spinach.
But the steak had the flavor of roast beef at a wedding or corporate xmas party . . . what IS that weird roast beef flavoring?

I've never had bad service on my very occasional visits to Moutarde. When they first opened, they had at least one totally top-notch waiter, but it's still perfectly pleasant and servicable there. The steaks are pretty cheap and good - $15-ish for steak with frites.

I wonder how Viejo Yayo (that big green place on Fifth Ave nearish to Flatbush) is . . . I've only gotten takeout cubanos, coffee, and pasteles there . . .
  • Enough people here seem to have had a bad service experience at Moutard, so I'll probably avoid it until they get their act together. The 12th street place sounds very good and I never would have considered Snooky's until today. I think I'll give both of them a try.

Actually Bob, it looks as if only one poster had a service issue at Moutarde, and several people found it to be fine. It's a good neighborhood place.

Speaking of, Two Toms at Third Ave (@ Union) has a pretty longstanding reputation for steaks and pork chops. I wouldn't count it in as date night, but it could be cool.

Bogota Bistro{Colombian} on 5th has a nice skirt steak with chimichurri
the chumichurri is kinda watery, should have more oil, more garlic. sadness
    but otherwise kickass
and i think it comes with two sides for under $20
    like $16 or something

it's fun too. ask for the plantain chips with black bean cilantro sauce
    it's great, and it's only $4

    it's a great date place

Is this place the one right across from Los Pollitos?
  • The Park Slope food CO-OP was wonderful steaks at reasonable prices.

    It has changed my life.
  • I had an aweful lunch experience at Moutard just a few weeks ago. The waiter clearly had no idea what he was doing. Our food took forever even though the place was half empty, and when it came - it was cold. That being said - I live right around the corner so I hope the service improves soon. Friends have said the steak is good.

I've can attest to the good steak at Snooky's. Now there is a neighborhood place! Its been around (in various forms) for decades.

yes. right across from Los Pollitos II
    they have a blog: http://www.bogotabistro.com/weblog/index.htm
  • CocCo Roco on 5th Avenue.
  • I made a reservation at Moutard for this weekend, so I will post and let you all know how it went. And I keep the other places in mind when I have me next red meat craving!! Thanks!!
  • I just got home from dinner. I will not be going back. My roommate and I went and had a reservation but they didn't have us on the list. Good thing the place was completely empty.

The food was not worth the price. I had the onion soup (bland, even salt did not help), the sirloin with mashed potatoes, and the profiteroles, while my roommate had the chicken and potatoes and the apple tart.

And the service…. my empty plate sat in front of me for 10 minutes while at least 4 people walked by, and by this time there where only 4 others in the restaurant.

Only positive is that the mustard dips are unique and the rum and cokes are strong.

hmmm. i had forgotten why i'm not fond of Moutarde.

it's real purty and all, but, for the price -- the food isn't much better than diner fare

Moutarde is where you take someone you don't know, and don't wish to risk offending
