The elusive breakfast burrito
So I've really only had like two satisfying breakfast burritos since Taco Bell stopped serving breakfast like, what, fifteen years ago, and neither of them are anywhere near new york. Does anyone know where I can get a good one in the area/in the city? Not like a tiny little just eggs and ham one like at Jack in the Box, either. I mean like egg, meat, sour cream, maybe some guacamole, salsa, etc...
Someone please help me before I have to- lord no- cook one for myself.

the one at new prospect (the dinerish place next to chase bank on flatbush near sterling/8th ave) is pretty good. I think they cook the whole thing up in lard, though, cause I pay later. and the one at shane isn't bad, but I hate that place.

otherwise, head down to bay ridge - I'm sure you can get a nice machacado and egg burrito. hrm. makes me wanna go. -
awesome awesome, two breakfast burritos to try in the area... what's on the one at the new prospect cafe? I got the shane menu online...

Bonita, in Williamsburg, makes a fabulous breakfast burrito. The restaurant is located on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg. Homestyle mexican food with a hipster twist...GREAT. Their cafe' con leches and sangria are great too! -
I know some of you are sour on Tom's but they make the BEST chili cheese omelet in the universe.
Highly recommended.
I don't know any breakfast burrito hookups, sorry.

Miracle Grill (7th Ave and 3rd St.) has a surprisingly good brunch and my husband loves their breakfast burrito. I always have their innovative version of eggs benedict, which is on cornbread (isn't that a great idea that you don't really see?) and served with a chipotle hollandaise. Mmmm.

Thanks for the tip- I love chili cheese omelets, and definitely plan to break my Tom's ordering pattern (pork sausage omelet with grits) and try this out!
Highly recommended. -

Off the subject, but how does one eat grits? Do you put something on it to impart some flavor? -
i had a breakfast burrito at second helpings (on 9th off 7th ave) that i really enjoyed. albeit, i was freezing and starving at the time, so that might have influenced my opinion. from what i remember, you choose the fillings from among some nice choices. rather pricey, fyi

Some people just like a little salt, pepper, and butter -- including me -- and cheese is the greatest in grits. MMMMMmmmm, cheese. -
grits.
1) grits alone (aka without other breakfast food): either cheese or lots of salt n' pepper.
2) grits with eggs: tobasco.

Butter, cheese, and/or pepper. -
I agree with the butter, salt/pepper, tabasco, cheese stuff. That said, grits are practically the same thing as polenta (except that they're made from hominy instead of untreated corn), and you could conceivably top them with anything you'd serve with polenta. I also like using uncooked grits as a coating for pan fried fish.

Excellent! Thanks! I'll have to give them another try.

Tavern on Dean has a decent breakfast burrito too. I was surprised.

more on grits:
my favorite: butter and pepper, then break the yokes on your over-easies and swirl them into the grits.
getting hungry just thinking about 'em. -
Grits are dope, but no real grit lover makes the instant variety. NEVER even flirt with instant grits. The same goes for oatmeal, but who wants to eat oatmeal anyway?
Yeah, butter, salt and pepper do the trick. Cheese is okay, but why get so heavy? Stay classic, stay true, hold yer line. -
Oh, and by the way, $4.00 for grits and cheese at Tom's is a deplorable, really rediculous abuse of power.

it IS a weird price, partly because getting scrambled eggs, grits and toast is like $3.50 there. I don't understand the small fortune for processed protein and fat at all. I just get the eggs and cheese and cover them in butter and tobasco. I will die soon. -
Yeah, Tom's gets insane with the prices. I'm always amazed at how much the bill is.

hahaha! I'm generally surprised by how low it is! esp. compared to shane. but really, all I want are the eggs and grits. I'm a cheap breakfast date. -
I went to New Prospect today and sampled their breakfast burrito. Not bad, not bad... Eggs, Rice, Beans, and some delicious green salsa and sour cream on the side. As has previously been posted, though, I did leave feeling a tiny bit queasy. The upside was the content- a bold combination of eggs with the rice and beans, and the salsa was real good. The downside, the aftereffects, plus the fact that they don't open until noon, so it's never really a "breakfast burrito." Also, I'm pretty sure the menu said there was some sort of meat in there, and there definitely wasn't. That said, I'd never been to that place before, and I found it cozy and charming. But my search for a fully satisfying breakfast burrito continues. Soon, Cafe Shane.
I will be documenting the search on my 'blog at www.awesomeburrito.com/news.html, so, you know, look out for that. -
