Building gutted on Franklin — Brooklynian

Building gutted on Franklin

I don't know if this was already posted, sorry if it was, but the building right next to 95 south (north of it) between lincoln and st. john's is totally gutted. walls, floors, everything gone and there were tons of guys inside doing renov.

any idea what's going in? at first i thought it was a franklin entrance for franklin park, but it seemed too far south.

  • That used to be a furniture store/showroom. There was a fire about a year ago and its been as is with the gate down ever since the firemen left that day. Glad something's finally happening.
  • yeah, i used to live across the street and i used to just stare at it and wish it was something awesome...not a many-year-closed furniture store. yesterday was really promising. totally gutted and full of people. we'll see what comes up..

  • saw today that they were dropped I-Beams down through the roof. There were a lot of people walking around on the roof as well, which got me thinking how awesome it would be if there was a roof-top space there since it's surrounded by taller buildings on both sides.
since everyone working was a full story up, i couldn't ask what it was going to be.

    anyone heard anything?
  • Mazon Discount store awning went up today. I am both glad to have an alternative to the small place across the street, but hope the competition is healthy and doesn't put the other one out of business - the people at the discount shop across the street and super helpful and nice.

Very unlikely. Mazon used to occupy the building that was on the northeast corner of Franklin & Eastern for years, they moved out some time ago when the building (and land) was sold to a developer, who then razed it and proceeded to start construction on a condo/apt. building that will clearly never be done.

Regardless, Mazon was right there before, and it never seemed to affect the smaller place a little further up the block.
  • I'm pretty sure the Mazon crew didn't sell out—they were the ones trying to develop the land, now a lovely sidewalk-blocking eyesore.
  • I recall Mazon closing -- sooo obnoxious. They sat with a megaphone held up to a tape recorder shouting "we're closing! going out of business! buy everything now! everything is $1. $1 socks. $1 dolls. etc. etc." it went all.day.long. i could hear it in my apartment.

i know that when they were 2 blocks apart things were fine, but now they are literally across the street from one another. so i'm hoping it's fine for both this time.

Also, I thought Mazon still owned the corner property? Although I had heard they weren't going to build there, just make money from an Olive Garden or something equally weird.
