  • Hmmmm... the other place I know of that:

    - is women only
    - smells like sex and booze
    - periodically emanates the sound of an ecstatic screaming female
    - allows you to smoke in the back
    - and that is pretty particular about it's clientèle

Is, well, my bedroom. So, who am I to judge...

  • ha! drunken you are luckier than most!
i am just expressing the views of the silent minority of some lesbians who are unable to find a place to relax without the "male gaze." isolation? no. separatist? perhaps. but all of us operate in the public sphere; working; commuting; neighborhoods, etc..why not have a place where a minority that has been targeted and harrassed can have a drink in peace? if farrell's was stilll men only; i'd have no desire to intrude. men need their caves too.
    i am ready for the
    -bars for dogs
    -bars for childless
    -bars for dogless
    -bars for asian-americans
but dog bashing isn't really gay bashing.

  • Good riddance, I say. Nothing to do with sexual orientation - simply loud drunken fools walking up my block at 4am - not to mention pissing all over the street. I hope they're gone for good.

Plus, drunken revival is correct, they were breaking all kinds of zoning laws there anyway.

  • er, that place pulled their permits legally.

and while there were plenty of white, hetero dudes there on poker night, they were not CAPABLE of drowning out the women. yeah, chip, it does suck that women-only social space has been essentially impossible for years, especially in a city like NYC. shit, I went to a women´s college and we had plenty of staff, professors, counselors, heads of house, etc that were male. not to mention the dudes that would take photography from MIT so they could pick up studio art chicks. but the women´s dance was always a blast, the naked party was always a blast, etc. (too bad the last prez of the college outlawed most of those) it was nice for no one to give a shit about 5 women humping.

in any case, the ´shack had always been comfortable to me because, while men, hetero or not, white or not, showed their faces, played poker, etc, for the most part they all understood that it was a space for women, not for them to pick up women.

hell, my poker strategy there was the polar opposite of playing in vegas or ac. I´d flirt with chicks to distract them (not guys), I´d demand to know how I misplayed a hand almost immediately (rather than wait until later to dissect my play with a few friends), I´d demand that players teach me ... and they would (rather than go home and google strategy on the internet), and fucking hell, more people there agreed with me about things like politics and corporate america and the rest of the fucking universe than anywhere else. it was a comfortable place to be me.

why that bothers some people is beyond my comprehension. there are 10k bars that cater to men in NYC, most likely. why is it such a problem to have a few that cater to me?
  • So are they kaput for good?

    no clue.
  • I saw some activity there on Saturday night. The gate was up and people scurrying about but it wasn't open for buisness. This was at about 10PM.

my understanding from the mailing list emails (which you could get from the website ... again, no clue what´s up now) is that the person who seized the biz is reopening, but not with the same theme.

cattyshack folk, again, according to emails, are bartending and djing around the city at places that rule like superfine (god, I miss that place). shit, I may poke my head into one of the gay bars in quito tonight.
  • crazy!! So what is up with Brooke then? Is she okay?
  • i am so sad.
  • Sorry to hear it closed down. I had never been in, though I lived up the block. But it seemed like the people who went there really appreciated that it existed.
  • hey alafairnadia, do the emails give any info on how to subscribe to them now that the website's been down? i'd love to get updates.
  • I've gone to Cattyshack a number of times and I don't think I was ever mistreated. But that's not to say others are or aren't.
I once saw a little person there. That was awesome.

not sure. PM me your email addy and I´ll forward you the stuff I´ve gotten.
  • Subject: none of you has any idea what you are talking about

no heterosexual man "stole" cattyshack. your beloved brook stole people's money and didn't pay taxes and hopefully will end up in jail. i'm so sick of hardcore lesbians' perceived animosity from straight men. cattyshack hasn't been fun in years.
  • as a hetrosexual male, now would be completely bad time to join this lame thread.
  • Is Cattyshack gone for good?
  • I heard from a former employee it's pretty much gone for good. :(

    Or at least altered forever.

I hear talk of moving the cattyshack parties to another venue, but nothing is set in stone.

to be honest, i'll be kind of glad my roommates can't drag me there anymore. the drinks were often free, but the atmosphere left something to be desired. not unfriendly, per-say, just sort of exclusive. i didn't feel like i was in with the in-crowd, sotospeak.
  • Subject: *HATED* it!

Down with Cornyshaft! I'm a young woman who loves to dance shoulder-to-shoulder with other dykes, but I eventually boycotted the place because of unfriendly, money-grubbing, chips-on-shoulders management and staff. Not only are the bars understaffed, they're staffed with pissy assholes. There are one or two bouncers who are ok, but rest of staff are annoying and bad at their jobs. Entry fee is a rip-off.

What sucks is that queer girls are so desperate for a fun, always-queer space they accept Catty as a great place. Maybe now something better will have to crop up to fill the void.
  • Subject: new party

I actually officially met bartender Bea last night at The Bell House and she gave me a flyer for a party they're starting up at The Bell House on 3/14 for gay boys AND girls. it's gonna take place every Saturday after that. I can't check it out on opening night but I do intend on going soon. Hope it's fun.
  • Is there another place nearby to go?
  • i just heard a *rumor* that the catty ladies got the shack back. can anyone confirm or refute?
  • I walked by there last evening around 7:30 and the doors were open and it looked like people were working in there.
