Carlyle is awesome (one of my couches is from there). Their couches are definitely not cheap, but I've never been to the clearance center, which sound worth checking out. If you want a quality couch for cheap, you could also see if they have any of the floor models for sale. Carlyle does generally sell them at a substantial discount.
the clearance center on W18th st has some deals -
Have you looked in the Door Store on Atlantic? There is actually a previous Brooklynian thread about couches where someone recommended that place. I only know this because I, too, am in the market for a non-Ikea, under $2k couch (though for me it is more like under $800) and have been looking for store ideas.
Also - if you're okay with both chenille and buying a sofa online there's this:
http://www.worldmarket.com/Furniture/living-furniture/upholstery-sofa/Quinn-Reversible-Sectional-Sofa/lev/4/productId/7034/Ne/1100001/N/1100039/categoryId/1100039/pCategoryId/1100038/gpCategoryId/1100002/Ns/TOP_SELLER_INDEX|1||CATEGORY_SEQ_2889|0/index.pro
Edit: someone already mentioned door store, sorry. Got called away for like an hour between message drafting and hitting send.
Second edit: This url should work better http://tinyurl.com/8njphk -

True Story! Give them an inch they take a mile! -

The Door Store! Yeah I need to check them out too. I love chenille for clothes but not sure how it would survive the dogs on a couch.
Honestly, Toadette you should check out Crate and Barrel and Jennifer. If you just want a regular couch not with a chaise, both places have a ton of really nice ones. C& B under a thousand and nicer than Jennifer(still nice) with many even under 500. I am just stuck on having the damn chaise. -

Rico, but it's on Atlantic

Craigslist, if you have the time to peruse the internets

Microfiber is the way to go with dogs. Go for a dark color, too. Hides the lovely muddy paw prints that inevitably happen. You could try leather, too. I personally don't think dog nails do half the damage cat nails do to leather. Besides, they're only going to lounge on it.

Subject: couch
all of my couches have come from Macy's. good selection, good prices and reliable. Also they have a warehouse on Carle Place on the Island (and a few other large stores do too). Prices there are really good and delivery is reasonable. -

Have you considered getting a sofa instead?

Looks like Macy's is having a one day sale tomorrow, doesn't hurt to go and check them out.

I ended up giving my hard earned $ to crate and barrel today. The couch just too sweet and I had to have it. I can't wait til it arrives! I spent a bit more than I wanted to but fuck it I will make it back next week.

You won't be sorry. When you get quality furniture, you'll have it for a long time.

it's beautiful! Good luck keeping the pups off. I keep my sofa covered with a huge quilt. I hate doing that because I love my sofa and want to actually see/enjoy it. But I found this and might try it...

OK this looks interesting but I am first going to try not lightly spraying but liberally SOAKING the couch in the bitter apple stuff. If that doesn't work, then I will look into this. UGH some of my older family members actually told me I have to get the plastic slipcovers. NEVER!!!!
