Go somewhere else for a week, then come home..

The wife and I got home last night around 5pm after a week in London, her on business, me just to go have a long weekend away with her somewhere fabulous.
Now, JFK to Atlantic Ave to Eastern Parkway to Washington Ave is probably not the most romantic set of vistas in 718, but we were both so damn happy go see the BMA's dome rise up, the familiar old apartment buildings..
London is a fantastic city - its one of those places that everyone should see at least once in their life, along with Yellowstone Nat'l Park and the Grand Canyon and Venice - but I was so happy to just be home, and thinking about it less than a day later, I'm not quite sure what the reason was (other than seeing my dog after a week's absence).
So I was curious to get others' reactions. -

The dulcet tones of 1 dollar vans tooting "Dixie" at anybody standing on a corner.
What was the thing that made you relax a little bit more and say, "ahh, it's good to be home"?
What would you bring back with you and do differently in the nabe?

I always am happy to see the dome of the Williamsburg Bank Building as I'm heading home from LaGuardia on the BQE.
-
I am always thrilled to be home, no matter how much I like where I was away. This is a totally charming topic.
For me, hitting Eastern Parkway signifies the homestretch from JFK . . . or there's a rise on the BQE, coming from Laguardia, where you see the skyline . . .
I guess that anticipation starts when you're flying low enough to see the city. Although I've yet to take the flight path that goes over Prospect Park, and I'm always looking for it.
After my reunion with pets, it's usually a reunion with Bonnie's!
After a driving trip, the route in is different. Sometimes through Staten Island . . . past Bay Ridge . . . to Sunset Park for a Vietnamese sandwich since we're totally starved for Asian food and spic after being in The South (or the midwest) and on the road. The splendor of the variety here is what we miss. -
Subject: Coming Home
I love seeing the Supers cleaning up in the mornings and the guys who hang out in front of that building in St. Johns. It never fails---someone always asks where I've been and says he's happy I'm back. Its nice. What I don't miss is the litter on St. Johns Place and the dog shit everywhere. Believe it or not, when I'm gone for extended periods of time, I always notice how nicely the neighborhood's coming along...It takes going away for a while to see the subtle changes. -
Wow, I'm going to come across as a scrooge here.
I find that I'm normally giving my lowest NY/Bklyn approval ratings when I return from a trip. I'm excited to get into my apartment, but trekking in from JFK (especially if by Airtrain/Subway) or driving through Staten Island or the Pulaski/Holland/Canal/Flatbush death combo (I know there are other ways, just an example) usually sucks the life blood out of me. -
The yellow storage building.

It's the freakish americana that presents itself on the drive from Newark that I like . . . there used to be acres of smashed and flattened cars stacked up along the highway somewhere in jersey that stunned and made me kinda happy after a long stay in the U.K. -

thats it for me too. Its why I love to fly out of Laguardia even though its further away. Its that drive home and seeing the skyline.
In terms of Brooklyn, its the Williamsburgh Bank dome.
Even the shortest trips still make me get all nostalgic when I see both of those things... I know I am home in the city I love. -
I'm with Brookfetish....the big ol' yellow storage building.

Ditto. How funny!!!!! That building is the BEST landmark. If you are taking a cab home its like make a left or right at the yellow storage building.
LOVE IT! 8) -
For me, it's those damn fences at LGA, by the ground transportation... the big, iron ones with the apple shapes. They were the first thing that I'd noticed on my first trip to the city. Every time I see'em it brings back some of that wonder.

yellow storage building!
conduit ave/atlantic is the best way back from jfk, hands down. -
new to the nabe and i have to say, when giving directions to friends..."Left at Washington, there'll be a big yellow building with STORAGE written on it"...

Coming in over Bklyn in a plane to LGA, I love trying to identify the streets and the neighborhoods, from Coney Island on up. As we all know, the flight path can go right over PH, so it actually can be hard to glimpse home itself!
But driving from LGA back on the BQE, there is a moment on the Kosciuszko (sp?) Bridge where you can spot the dome of the Museum right next to 135 EP - that says 'home' to me!
