THE FINAL WORD: Best sushi in the neighborhood poll — Brooklynian

THE FINAL WORD: Best sushi in the neighborhood poll

OK. Let's see what most people think once and for all! This poll is strictly about which has the best tasting sushi. Service, decor, price, availability of delivery or any other factor should not be considered here.

I'm leaving Blue Ribbon out to eliminate the Zagat-struck factor, and because it's in a totally different price class than everywhere else in the nabe.

  • Any chance of getting Yamato on there? Or did i probably miss a thread where i am the only one that likes them.
  • Y Canteen went out of business, I think. I never tried it but I heard some good things. Too bad.

Ouch! Sorry, I meant to have an "Other" option. I always forget to click "add" after the last poll option! Unfortunately, it's impossible to edit the poll question itself once it's submitted. Choices not listed above will have to be listed as write-ins. You should still vote from among the choices above though.
  • I vote Yamato, all the way.

    YA!
    MA!
    TO!
  • For all you Geido fans, what do you like there? I am mostly into rolls and their selection is pretty sad. Do you guys like their apps or sushi/sashimi pieces or what?

    LONG LIVE KIKU!
  • I like Sushi Tatsu, But what Gen and Geido have on it is awsome atmosphere which goes a long way, the music and decor in Sushi Tatsu is soo lame but I love the sushi there. I'm ashamed to admit I don't really know the other places. where is Yamato? what makes it so good?
  • I'll add Yamato and Other.
  • This poll brought to you by Gentrification. :P
  • I voted for Gen, because they don't go overboard on rice. It's really a toss-up between Gen and Geido, of course.

I can't believe somebody voted for Tatsu...
  • I love, love, love Gen. It's always my first choice, and Geido my second.
  • I have to vote for Taro and Tamari.
I've given geido and gen each 4 tries and been let lot for the most part. (not I like to try both kitchen and sushi bar dishes)
I'll give geido extra points for the okonomiyaki, which is my favorite of all japanese dishes.
Taro has best fish, if you're lucky try the aji.

I like the sashimi. The roll selection is a tad thin, its true, but what i've had of the rolls was pretty good. Particularly the spicy mexican roll, and the dragon rolls. It's not a fancy place full of crazy sushi you've never heard of, it's just standard, and kickass and reasonably priced at that.
  • As a vegetarian, my opinion on sushi doesn't really hold much weight, but I voted for Kiku. They've got a huge selection of veggie-friendly rolls - much more than your standard cucumber and avocado rolls. My girlfriend, who eats fish, likes Kiku as well. The food is always very fresh, well prepared, and they usually have some interesting specials.
  • Dumb question:
Where in the heck are these places? I've only been to Taro.

Kiku is on 5th Ave near Union in the PS
Gen is on Washington and St. Marks (I think)
Geido is on Flatbush between Park and Prospect
Taro is on that triangle on 6th Ave and Flatbush (not sure about that either)
Yamato is in the PS, 7th and between 6th st and 4th.. not sure

Google them to get the correct addresses!!!!!

and Tamari is on 5th Ave even nearer to Union
I always forget about that place, and it's totally excellent. No sushi, only rolls and delicious stylized apps, and lots of cooked food. I really dig that little old lady who runs the front of the house.
  • Yamato is basically on the corner of 7th Avenue and 1st Street. The service there is great and my commute home from too much sake is great (only fall on my face once a trip).
  • Isn't Yamato under renovation? I walked by this past weekend and the windows were all papered up. I think a sign said they were just renovating and would reopen but it made me wonder what other changes may be in the works.

Yeah, I do recall seeing that recently...
  • Last time I walked by, I took a look at Yamotos construction permit - it said somethign about moving the sushi bar, so it sounds like when they reopen they'll still be serving sushi, at least.

Spicy white tuna roll. They make the best I've ever had, period, bar none.

Close second is my 'dessert roll': white tuna, cucumber, shiso hand roll. It's that perfect last thing to have.
  • "Hey! That dessert roll was my idea!"

(note my lack of total agreement here)
  • By all means Taro gets the high five. You just cannot get any fresher tasting toro (all grades) and uni anywhere else in Brooklyn or even Manhattan for that matter. Geido has a nice kitchen but their fish is pretty weak tasting. Yamamato comes in a close second. As for the rest, once you've been to Fujisan you've pretty much been to all the other sushi dumps in Brooklyn. Plus! Taro has great fried shrimp heads and fried fish bones!

I totally agree. I just didn't want to bias the poll by saying that up front.
  • Yamato was open last night.

Glad to see you got my back, Yo!
  • Yeah, sorry for the mis-info re yamato being closed for renovations, it's not yamato but the other sushi place across the street from them, the one that is below the mexican place.
  • taro hands down. I love that place. if you sit at the counter the sushi chefs often suggest things to try (which is very helpful for someone who isn't very adventurous on her own).

You must work for Taro, or something. This is just bonkers.

The poll results so far seem to say otherwise.
