Facebook-induced midlife crisis
Ok so I hopped on the Facebook bandwagon and got back in touch with people from all chapters of my life. The thing is, it had propelled me in a "what have I done with my life?" midlife crisis. Seeing all these friends from my past makes me feel like I barely have friends today.
ANyone else have this reaction to facebook? Basically, am I the only one who wound up feeling like a total loser? Please don't kick me when I am down. Thanks.

facebook is evil. get out while you still can.

I don't do facebook. I just don't like that many details of my life out there, and I don't want people knowing what I'm up to all the time (can't even imagine using Twitter). Plus, sites like those are being used more and more by companies doing research on their employment candidates.
but tons of other people enjoy it...just not my thang -
I had to join Facebook for a work project. Then I got kind of into it. Then the work project ended and I was still wasting time on Facebook.
I got out. I deleted all my friends and groups and closed the account. One of the best things I did all last year.
I just feel like it's a big timesuck. I mean, when you (anyone) are on Facebook or MySpace, do you feel like yr actually getting anything done? Doing anything productive? Am I meant to put the dates my band is playing up there so that you still won't come?
If you like it, then great, keep on truckin'. But don't feel like you have to be on the Facebook or the MySpace just cause everyone else is. Ask yourself: what would I miss if I just got out?
my $0.02. -
I love crackbook! I do not have any pics of me up nor is my government name anywhere on the account. I reconnected with really good people I would have never been able to find again otherwise. Its actually pretty amazing. I have my privacy settings so nobody but my friends can see anything and I only discuss what i want to.
to the OP: no it did not make me feel like a loser. it is natural that as we age our circle of friends shrinks and becomes much more close knit. it's a good thing! -
Facebook is what you make of it.
Ruska, the "what have I done with my life" question could have come up during a high school or college reunion. So it's not a Facebook specific issue.
It is natural as you get older and your interests/life changes you edit your friends. It's not the number of friends that are important, it's the ones that you can count on to be there for you. -
funny.....it's been actually a very different reaction for me with Facebook. i'm shocked by how many folks I went to high school with just look 15-20 years older than I do. Folks respecially those outside NYC) really just have not taken care of themselves. It's sad.
There are those strange "loser" moments in which I tried to friend my high school prom date, but never was confirmed by her, etc., but you really just have to take it all in stride. In the end, I've made and maintained more positive connections with people through Facebook than negative ones, and feel that, with all its privacy stuff, etc., it's finally social networking done right. -

That's because you don't. Nor do I, nor do most people, especially as they age and get busy with imperatives other than going out and making new friends. You didn't need Facebook to tell you that, and you shouldn't feel like a loser as a result.
For me, the major advantage of using FB is staying in much better touch with people who have dispersed over the globe, most of whom have also chosen to use it. If the people I grew up with were less evenly distributed over continents and timezones, I might not bother. If it starts to suck more, and people give up and move on, then I won't continue to bother. -
on another message board i have this in my signature.

only regret is i no longer get invited to parties and hangout events. cause all my friends are on facebook. I got in on facebook when it was with college email only.
blah people don't call any more after facebook. -
Facebook is what you make it... I keep in contact with people, maybe throw safe pics up from parties and thats it.

ruska- i look at all the pics of the folks i went to high school with-all of their profile pics are them and their babies. ugh. yes, i am a parent (big fkn deal) but that is not what defines me! i HATE facebook, and am reminded of two things.
1. I was unpopular in high school and hated the popular kids
2. The popular kids are now pathetic one dimensional suburbanites, and i am uncategorically fabulous!
3. I am still a hater;-) -

I'm not convinced it was you. ...unless you were blond as a kid.
I do wish Facebook would hurry up and put Classmates.com out of business. ...their endless emails drive me nuts. -
