Actually I've had to get involved between hawk and bird and oddly enough,
the hawk did not interfere once I stepped in. Also hawks do not
like to get into it with crows. There have been a few times I've started
crowing like hell to discourage a hawk away from a nest in a tree.
It has worked. I work outside and from April through October I'm with
these creatures everyday. It's a hard thing to watch but really hard to
do much once the hawk has actually taken hold of the bird, bunny or
whatever. Still, I've had two good saves.

I would have loved to see this act.

People pay $50 a month on cable to watch this type of thing on Discovery. You get to see it for free!

Geez... The OP was compassionate enough, brave enough and sharing enough and unfortunately useless enough because they were a human and not an animal that might intervene in this dance, to post in the first place. The food chain, the animal explanations aside... Why has this thread turned in to some kind of a "joke?"I don't know the answer and have no response to the OP. It just makes be sad to read this thread.... in many ways.

You should of stomped the parrot's head and left it for who ever wanted it, hawk or cat. I had to take a tire iron to a deers head last winter after someone hit it and left. It was extremely unpleasant but to do otherwise under the auspices of "natures way" is cowardly.You could of found some immigrant to do the dirty work. They tend to have a more realistic view of the world.

That was a funny story. All it needed was a dog to come wipe out the cat.
I believe you did the right thing by not interfering with nature in the urban jungle. As it has been said in the thread, the parrot was good as dead when those talons crushed into it's bird body.
I have read about and seen news stories on the parrots of Brooklyn. The last news story I remember is how the flocks are threatened with being wiped out by parrot nappers.

for some reason this reminds me of the first fish i caught, on a lake in upper michigan, when i was six:

it was tiny. too small to keep. so even though my father believes catch-and-release is "fish torture", we threw it back.

in the 2 seconds the fish was falling from the height of the rowboat gunnels to the water, a gull swooped down out of nowhere and snapped that fish up.

later, my dad said the fish wouldn't have lived anyway, since i'd hooked it (or more likely, it had hooked itself) through the gills. of course, he'd previously given me a little talk about how you throw undersized fish back so they have a chance to grow bigger.

(the moral lessons involved seem increasingly complex as i get older.)

i believe you were not morally obligated to intervene, since your intervention would not have changed the outcome of the story except for maybe causing the bird to become trash rather than food. crazy scene to see play out on your doorstep. thanks for the report.

No animals were killed in the making of this film.

i put some shirts on my fire escape to dry a year ago and they disappeared.

the next day my cats were hissing at this huge raccoon that was just sitting on the stairs of the escape. I guess he took my clothes.

this was on the 4th floor too on Lincoln pl.

also ive seen hawks in prospect park maul some little birds.
