Which airport do you use more often -- JFK or LGA? — Brooklynian

Which airport do you use more often -- JFK or LGA?

I have a friend in the nabe who always insists LGA is the better airport to use. But it seems JKF is closer -- or is it? Looking for feedback on specific items:

1.) Which is a more convenient commute on the train? (I've done the commute to LGA but not JFK. Which is quicker/easier?)

2.) How much is the cab fair from JFK to P. Heights?

3.) Does one airport have cheaper fares, generally speaking?

4.) Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

  • LGA is much easier to get to, from where I live at least. However, I fly to Sacramento about once a month and since Jet Blue has a direct flight from JFK, I have been taking that. Its a litter bit further, but I dont mind.

LGA is definitely a quicker easier commute on the train
Faires from LGA and JFK are generally similar, unless its JET BLUE which is consistantly cheaper and only really available out of JFK
  • JFK has better pub trans access. LGA has more convenient flights (for us). Cab and town car is about the same.
  • which train is that that goes to LGA? I'm guessing you meant JFK since you have to take a bus to LGA which takes forever.

I think driving LGA is faster but using public transit JFK all the way.
  • LGA itself is less of a nightmare as an airport than JFK. Distance and cab fare aside, I much prefer to fly out of LGA because it's somewhat more functional.
  • Too bad there's no option of neither. I'd rather go to Newark. It always ends up being easier for me.

Yeah, but the train trip to Newark can be a real bite in the wallet. It's like $28 round trip right? JFK is less than than via LIRR to Jamaica or even the A to Howard Beach.
  • Subject: In order of preference

JFK. Long-term parking is cheap. AirTrain gets you to the terminals. JetBlue rules!
EWR. Easy to get to and the parking goes on forever. Sometimes I have to use it 'cause it's a Continental hub.
LGA. Use only when necessary. Too many delays.
Since I drive sometimes I've been able to get really great deals in Philadelphia (US Airways/Southwest fare wars) and Islip MacArthur (Southwest) and occasionally United out of HPN (Westchester County)
  • I travel a lot for work, and I've found that flights into LGA get delayed way more often than JFK.

It's cheaper than that. I usually take the PATH to Newark-Penn Station and the NJ Transit one stop to the Air Train. Andy actually made the trip and timed it/calculated the costs somewhere on the DH blog.
  • this should have been a poll! :P LGA all the way. or i mean, when possible.
  • LGA is distressing b/c of the hard banking they do on liftoff. *shudder* after doing my job (I worked a lot with 9/11 information), I don't handle low-to-the-ground banking well at ALL.
JFK is irritatingly large and poorly constructed.
    EWR ate my pants.

    is there another option?
  • JFK. You have several options (streetwise) getting there as opposed to LGA where you're stuck with the BQE which can get pretty bogged down. Plus! JFK seems to have a quicker departure/arrival rate than LGA. I've spent more than 45 minuts at a time waiting for our turn to take off and even more time waiting for a gate to open after landing.
  • Idlewild wrote: I've spent more than 45 minuts at a time waiting for our turn to take off...
Off the subject but on the subject- the fact that the timeliness of departures is determined by the time that you pull away from the gate, as opposed to the time that you take off, really irks me... nothing worse than sitting in those damn uncomfortable chairs for an hour before you take off... on a fairly recent flight, we watched The Mask II in it's entirety while in queue... the waiting is bad enough, but being subjected to The Mask II? Torture.

The last time I took a train to LGA it was the F line and then I transferred to a bus in Kew Gardens. It took a long ass time. You can take the LIRR from Atl Ave to Jamaica and hop on the JFK Express for an extra $5.00. I hear it's quick.

The cab fare from JFK to P. Heights should fall in the $25-$30 range if the traffic is good and you tell the cabbie to take the Van Wyck or JFK Expressway to North Conduit and then take the Conduit to Atlantic Avenue and then take that to Eastern Parkway.

LGA seems to have the cheaper domestic fares unless you're taking Jet Blue from Kennedy.

Avoid Newark and if you take a cab from JFK make sure he doesn't take the Belt Parkway back.

  • other than alafairnadia's pants being eaten(?), newark is not so bad at all..

It's in Jersey! That's bad enough in itself! Right,Flute?

Yeah, but just setting foot in that state makes me feel all dirty... :P

an escalator in newark grabbed my jeans around halfway up the ankle and wouldn't let go. I was going to lose my pants so I gave a mighty tug and ended up with pants with a massive hole in them. MASSIVE. to their credit, the newark employees were very responsive and apologetic. I like the airport a lot, honestly, and it's pretty easy to get to and from. I fly from there frequently as my family is in houston and continental is the best deal round trip.
  • I take the long train hike to LGA it seems every other month. (Either I'm flying or picking up a friend). It is such a long ass ride -- you're on the train for about an hour and then the bus for another 30 minutes. I usually take the NW to Astoria Blvd and then the bus from there. I just thought maybe the commute to JFK would be quicker.

Also, I've spent a $40-45 on a cab from my house to LGA, so I was wondering if the cab fare was cheaper back from JFK. Seems like it is a little bit.

Newark is just too far for me.

    Thanks all for your input.
  • Can someone add a poll to this? I can't figure out how to do it and I'd really like to know. For scientific purposes, of course.

whoa! cab fare from newark is $50! $45 from LGA?! that's insane. I'd kill someone.
  • If I fly out of LGA, it's usually for work, and I can expense a car service ride for that - so I don't care.

If I fly personally, I look into JFK, first, and try to take the A train to the AirTran.
  • Approximatley how long does it take to take the A (from the Broadway/Lafayette stop) to the airtran, and then the airtran to the airport?
  • PHeightsGirl wrote: Approximatley how long does it take to take the A (from the Broadway/Lafayette stop) to the airtran, and then the airtran to the airport?
Forever. I can't believe people are willing to deal with that shit when they're carrying luggage around. A cab is well worth it. On the way back from the airport, you can usually find someone in the cab line to split a cab with (NOTE: You are NOT ALLOWED to do this at Newark, which is another reason why Newark sucks).

ah - but newark is a flat rate. so if you get stuck in traffic, as often happens out of the airports or in nyc in general, you're not paying any more or less.

but I do agree that cabs are well worth the trouble. and if you're lazy and cheap and don't mind hanging out at the airport for a few hours, use super shuttle.
  • PHeightsGirl wrote: Approximatley how long does it take to take the A (from the Broadway/Lafayette stop) to the airtran, and then the airtran to the airport?
I remember about 45 minutes from Clinton/Washington, C to the A to the Airtrain. I thought it was convenient.
  • PHeightsGirl wrote: Approximatley how long does it take to take the A (from the Broadway/Lafayette stop) to the airtran, and then the airtran to the airport?
Only took me about 45 minutes last time I did it. It takes me that long to get to Midtown (which I do every day), so I don't see what the big deal is.
  • I still haven't flown out of JFK or Newark. I used to do Islip when my Grandparents in Smithtown were still alive, but now its all LGA.

Cab fare, etc. aside--I went to american airlines website to compare fares for my upcoming trip in May, and JFK was almost $100 more for certain flights on the same day. THAT is a big reason to choose LGA for me. Of course, as soon as Jet Blue starts flying to St. Louis...
