looking for dog obedience trainer

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I am new to the area and have a very social, but also overly bouncy Boston Terrier.
We are hoping to go Prospect Park for off leash play time but need a dog trainer. He needs some socializing training. Can someone recommend an inexpensive dog trainer in the area who could work with us?

Thanks.

  • I highly recommend Tyril. We used him when our dog was a pup and we weren't confident about letting her run off-leash. He worked with us both in Prospect Park and at our home. He's also trained hundreds of dogs in the neighborhood - he's in the park several days a week and always has his "alumni organization" greeting him.

oh yes. thumbs up for Tyril!!!

worked with him in the past and he's great

i recommend him whenever someone i know is in need of doggie training

i have a notion that your breed of puppy just needs to run off leash and he'll be fine. he's a working dog and needs to run as often as possible, plus he'll calm down markedly once the puppyhood is over

Terry{people in the know call him Terry  } will work with you on some recall exercises and you should be good after a few sessions
  • i LOVE renee payne www.doggiecouch.com
we had her come in for my gf's jack.
i have trained dogs myself but thought it was important that she learn from someone else. (and save us a painful 'divorce')
the last time i checked, Tyrill was still using "negative correction" methods instead of strictly positive reinforcement.
He may have changed his tactic but if he hasn't, that sort of training can make bad behavior worse.
    thats my 2 cents.
choosing the right trainer for you and your dog is REALLY REALLY important (not to sound like an infomercial  ).
this is a good place for some info on how to choose one as well as a really great resource for finding certified trainers:

    good luck!

i WUV renee payne as well! she's really great with dogs, but i've never used her behavior training services so i can't speak on that

please. pretty pretty please let's not devolve into a 'negative' vs 'positive reinforcement' flame war

whoever is looking for a dog trainer should do their research and find a trainer whose methods they are comfortable with.
  • Subject: Barky Yorkie

Does anyone think Tyril can help my aggressive 6lb Yorkie calm down? He pees and poops on command, but I can't make him stop barking.
  • hahahahahah!!!!
my great dane could help her stop barking!

  • Honestly, the only thing that stopped my lil' yapper was buying one of those corrective collars. He used to bark so much the COPS came (and he is a small dog. Granted, this was also a small town where the cops were a lot more concerned about this sort of thing). Best 100 bucks I ever spent (cheaper models are also available)
