The Knitting Factory is moving to Williamsburg

  • Yep, it's taking over Luna Lounge on Metropolitan. Never against having another live music venue in the hood. Am gonna miss their current location though. Many great memories between the shows I've seen there and shows I've played there.

I used to like their original location on Houston.

And here's hoping that will mean an improved space on Metropolitan. I used to love the old Luna Lounge on Ludlow, but shows in the new place usually left me disappointed. Mostly because I felt that they rarely got the sound right.
  • Yea I'm sure Knitting will make any renovations needed to make sure sound is improved and up to par. They're not opening til May I think, so they're probably gonna be doin' something atleast. I just hope they keep the damn Pabst cheap unlike those bastards at Trash Bar.
  • I should say I don't think the sound equipment at the new Luna Lounge was likely under par. It was more in the execution, and my theory was that the system was designed for the acoustics of that huge room when it was full of bodies... but it rarely was, at least at the shows I went to. Basically you have to reconfigure to compensate for that and there was certainly no reason why that couldn't be done effectively with the setup that was there.

So maybe what I'm really hoping for is a bigger crowd. Or smaller rooms (which, being the Knitting Factory, may be likely). Or, hire me. :)
  • I actually never saw shows at the Wburg Luna Lounge, so I've got no experience crowd-wise or sound-wise. Knitting seems to book shows that would at least half fill the main room. What was the cap at the Wburg Luna? I believe Knitting was 400 so if they keep those kinda shows coming in they might just be in business. Man, I am gonna miss playing that damn place.
  • Capacity was about 300. I was there for five or six shows, and attendance varied between maybe 50 and 90. As it happened, I don't think I was ever there on a weekend night, when I'd assume the draw was bigger -- and wouldn't be surprised if it sounded fine then.
  • I'm pretty sure main room was 400, at least that's what our contracts and itineraries always said. Weekend shows were usually more packed, but it always depends on who's playing. I've seen it packed to the brim, balcony and all. Those shows were always the best.

it could have just been a shitty sound dude.

You're talking about the Knit, right? My "300" was in response to your question about Luna Lounge.

Yep. Thing is, they had what looked to be a good setup, and the board right in the middle of the room should help, and they even had Smaart Live (audio measurement/analysis system) running on a laptop next to the board... which should help, but could hurt really if you don't know what it means and try to mix to that display instead of what your ears are telling you. :)

  • Oh crappy house sound guys. The bane of a touring musician's existence. Except in the UK! Everybody seems to have it down pretty tight there.

  • Hah didn't mean to generalize. "Sound guy" was just always what we called em. Even when we'd have a woman running FOH occasionally they'd introduce themselves as "the sound guy".

i work as a sound tech for columbia university, so ive done anything from micing mayor bloomberg for a conference to doing sound for a full scale musical.
i also have done freelance sound for rock shows here and there, and thats what i like to do best obviously...

Me too, as implied by my "hire me" advice a few posts back. :?
  • Well let's hope they don't sterilize it and gentrify it like The Bowery Presents did to the old NorthSix space when they converted it into the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

    That place officially sucks.

Fact. I loved the NorthSix so much and I tried to hold back going to this Music Hall of Williamsburg for so long. Finally went to see Pinback there in Oct, and it was actually depressing how fucking crappy it's become.
