  • I have a good web-browsing phone and love being able to extend the reservation on the fly, but I ran in to a little problem with it last time.

I purposefully chose one of the cars that had no other reservations until the late afternoon, figuring that I could extend if the vet visit went long... The vet visit did go long, of course, so I hopped on my phone to extend, but I got an error message indicating that the car was reserved for someone else. I flew back over to the garage, leaving my wife and cat at the vet (having no other choice), and pulled in to the garage at 1:29 (was supposed to return by 1:30). As I pulled in, I saw a woman and a stroller-child (the kind of kid big enough that he should probably be walking on his own, but isn't for some god-forsaken reason... but that's a whole 'nother subject...). The woman was clearly worked up, cell phone in hand, evidently calling ZipCar to complain about me for not returning early. The garage attendant (the very lax gentleman that I had to wait 15 minutes for, upon picking up the car 2 hours earlier) rushed out of his little office to lean over the hood of the car to verify that this was the car that she had reserved. They both shot me dirty looks, making me want to bitch both of 'em out, but I restrained myself. I mean, a) I got a late start because the garage attendant wasn't there- he was evidently out cruising with the friends that dropped him off after I had waited for 15 minutes, b) why would you make a reservation that butts up against someone else's reservation? Why not select one of the other cars available or at least allow a half hour? c) If you DO make a reservation that butts up against another, don't be huffy when the car is returned ON TIME. Boo hoo, you couldn't pick up your car early.

Meanwhile, there were two other ZipCars sitting there, at least one of them with the same hourly rate... wtf?
  • Subject: fear of NYC driving

I'm very interested in Zipcar (I have this urgent need to go to IKEA in the next few weeks to buy furniture), but I've also a few problems:

    1. I'm kind of afraid to drive in NYC. I've only ever really driven in northern New England, besides one trip from Boston to central NJ driving a smaller U-Haul truck. Has anyone else had this fear? How did it go for you?

    2. IKEA Elizabeth charges $104.99 to deliver 1-15 items. Startup Zipcar costs for an occasional driver run $175. I'm uncertain that I'll get my money's worth with occasional use, unless I get over my fear from #1.

    3. My husband holds a drivers license, but hasn't driven in 12 years. I'd be the sole driver, unless he practiced driving often enough that he felt confident driving in NYC.

Argh. Zipcar sounds so enticing, regardless... :?

at what point do you complain to Zipcar?
the garage on Flatbush has been great about having the cars ready. the one on Union St has held me up for 15 - 20 minutes a couple of times
You call in advance, but the car is blocked in or buried somewhere . . . it's irritating when you're just going to the vet or some other 2 hour excursion
  • Megan- Yeah, it's tough to say if you'll get enough out of it... I don't use the cars all that much, but I still use'em a few times per month. I forget, though- how much of that initial deposit do you get back? You get 100 back when you quit, right? And does 50 go towards rentals? I dunno, it's been a while...

I've always LOVED to drive. Before I sold my car and moved to NYC, I would usually drive 25-30k miles per year, but I was still a little nervous about driving in NYC the first time. I got over it pretty quickly.

The traffic here is a little different, not better or worse, just different... a lot more improv. I don't feel that you really have to worry too much about offending other drivers because a) you're going to offend someone no matter what, so why worry? b) you drive almost expecting other people to do stupid stuff, so I would assume that everybody else expects the same, and c) even if you do something really stupid, odds are that someone else will do something more stupid/dickhead than you, at the same intersection, in less than ten minutes time. Now, I'm not advocating that anyone go out there looking to be a prick, but don't let it keep you up at night if some guy laid on his horn because you cut him off.

Pitu- I dunno on that one, either... ZipCar seems to be pretty responsive, but realistically, what are they going to do about it? They need to have their cars out there... and I'm sure that the garages are letting them have the spaces at somewhat (a lot?) of a discount.

    yeah, that's why I don't bother.
I want their service to work, and
I want that car to be on Union St . . .
