Subject: Taro Sushi, What's the Big Whoop?

finally tried Taro Sushi this weekend, Saturday night. Have heard here and elsewhere that its the best sushi in the Slope. Well it certainly wasn't bad by any means, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. For my money, I far prefer Yamato on 7th Ave, or if I am in the mood to spend more, Blue Ribbon. What was I missing? We had a few assorted rolls and sashimi.

  • i think taro is the best, but it's hard to say without knowing your criteria. what is it that you like better about yamato?
  • I had Taro for lunch and it was a good deal. But I'm not a sushi expert.
  • I guess I feel that Yamato's rolls are plumper and meatier. I am preggers right now, so had to stick to the cooked stuff. My dragon roll was tasty, but not as plump or eel-filled as it would be at Yamato, and my shrimp tempura roll was bland, mushy and tasteless. Husband's fresh fish and rolls were more appealing, but he didn't think his fatty tuna was very flavorful, as it normally is, and we both prefer any kind of spicy roll to have the fish chopped finely with the spicy mayo, as opposed to just slapped together, as it was at Toro.

    We will give it another try and order some other items, maybe we didnt order right for the place. They dont have Miso Eggplant though, which I always order at sushi joints. bummer...
  • I'm not *an expert* either but Taro is super fresh, and not wildly expensive - so I like it. The omakase (where the chef picks for you) is what people go nuts for -- authentic, fresh.

    If you love large (plump, meatier, whatever) rolls, then you want a place that caters to the size queen U.S. market. Taro sushi looks small compared to Monster Sushi . . .

    You might want to try Tamari (5th Ave 'tween Union/Sackett) -- very tasty, lots of cooked stuff, minimal raw fish items on the menu, although they're always impeccable.
  • Have yet to try Taro, but LOVE LOVE LOVE Yamato! Always happy when I go there- very consistent.

  • I don't necessarily get the Taro thing either, but I've gone with folks who really know their sushi, and they absolutely can tell the difference. I'll go with what they think.

    I happen to think that Nana and Picasso have great sushi, so what do I know....

    I'm not sure that reviewing a sushi place when you're "preggers" and only reviewing the "cooked stuff" is really fair. I eat at Taro and Blue Ribbon once every couple of months and overall have had really fresh, flavorful fish at each spot. Wait till the kid is old enough to stay at home with a babysitter and try the omakase at Taro on a weeknight. I think you might enjoy it.

    you do realize that the term "sushi" refers to the style of rice, not the fact that it's raw fish? I think reviewing this while "preggers" is just fine- cooked sushi should be just as delish as raw.

    Seriously? Are we having trouble with reading comprehension? This is not rocket science and non-raw sushi should be just as DELICIOUS as raw.
  • i HIGHLY recommend oshima on 7th and berkeley.

    i think their sushi is fantastic. cooked AND raw.

    their oshima salad is really good too, as is the seared tuna appetizer.

    the eel is amazing.
  • I had Taro last night with an old friend from out of town and it was delicious!!!

    Highly recommended! And I am kind of a sushi snob too, the viscosity of the salmon roe was perfect, which is always how I judge the freshness of my sushi. :)

    No problem with my reading comprehension. Using delish when talking or writing about food is a little too Rachel Ray for my taste.

    Back to the OP. Going to Taro sushi and ordering cooked sushi immediately eliminates a good bit of their menu. Those raw items are the highlights of the menu and they are what make Taro an above average restaurant. I have never had the shrimp tempura roll and don't think it is fair to base an opinion on only ordering off half the menu.

    If you note, in my original post, I do make mention of trying it again, and trying the raw stuff. The raw stuff was tried by my husband, incidentally, who was also unimpressed.

    Maybe I will go back and try the Omakase. But sorry folks, I am bringing the baby.

    Bring the kitty instead!! I'm sure s/he would enjoy sushi much more than the baby would! :wink:
