Doctor Recommendations — Brooklynian

Doctor Recommendations

Hi, all!

While reading another thread I saw some mentions of doctors. I was a little confused as to which were vets and which were human doctors, so I'll start a new thread.

Mrs. RT and I are looking for a new GP. One That Does Not Suck.

One that does not lecture about weight.

One that does not think a good strategy for dealing with chronic pain issues is to "distract oneself. You know, like when you have a headache and you stub your toe?"

One that does not ask you what you mean when you say "my partner".

"You mean your business partner?" (direct quote)

One that DOES:

work in a reasonable distance from schenectady and sterling (under a mile would be GREAT! If not, a good doctor is worth schlepping for, even with strep or whatnot)

understand fibromyalgia (read:not think it is all in one's head)

have EVENING hours (or weekend, but I know that's asking for A LOT!!!)

take HIP. This is the most important.

Neighbors- weigh in! Tell me about your great doctor.

  • I can't say enough about my favorite GP - Mike Raffinan. I've sent a bunch of people to see him and every one of them was happy.

He's young, definitely open-minded, listens to YOUR ideas about your health an no lectures. He's also very easy on the eyes, but something about your post makes me think that won't sway you ;-)

here's his website. My only hesitation in recommending him is that I don't want it to be harder for me to get an appointment after I send so many people his way!

  • He takes HIP (and almost anything else you can think of...plus knows how to work the system to save you money when possible). Not sure about nights/weekends (or that you'll really be able to find that easily anywhere). I'm not familiar with where you live, but he's in PS near Flatbush/7th Ave. and has downtown Manhattan location too, which is a fairly easy commute for many
  • Hooray! I will call him tmw.

cool. Let me know how it goes
  • Dr. Raffinan gets my vote too. Very, very good guy.
  • Me three
  • I have to give a strong vote for Dr. Schwartzburt. She's on Eighth Ave. between Lincoln and Carroll, just a block and a half from the Grand Army stop on the 3 train. She does gynecological exams as well as GP check ups and is into alternative as well as traditional medicine. I've been floating around from doctor to doctor for years and am definitely sticking with her. My visit to her as a new patient was incredibly thorough. She noticed the eczema on my elbow, which I never would have thought to mention, my athlete's foot, (sorry, I know, yuck) gave me a tetanus shot and asked if I wear my seat belt or not. She also asked questions about my personal relationships like, "When you have a problem, who do you talk to?" and "Have you ever been in an abusive relationship?" I give her super high marks. Oh, and she was recommended to me by a friend who has been living with HIV for twenty years. He's been with her for years and found her sensitive to his condition long before being so became something people expected.
  • RT- I'm so sorry you've had such awful experiences with doctors! I've had my share as well, as have many other folks I'm sure. It is SO difficult to find a good doctor. But it's imperative that you find a person who not just knows medicine, but with whom you feel comfortable (i.e., someone who respects you). I mean, you're putting your life in this person's hands! I hope everything works out with the doctor everyone above recommends.
  • You guys are silly.

You recommended two doctors. Were you aware they share an office? I saw Dr. R today and he seemed pretty nice. Maybe I will meet Dr. Schwartzburt and check her out too. Everyone was very nice at the office and I didn't have to wait at all! (First patient of the day...)

    Thanks
  • "pretty nice" is probably the least positive review I've heard of Dr. R :-) ....but i am glad it seems to have been a good experience
  • I think in the end he isn't the doctor for me, but I'm so glad everyone loves him!
