  • That's John Hodgman. I don't know about the slope, but there is a great audio monologue on The Moth/This American Life in which he talks about being spotted in the Apple Store in Manhattan ("pure pandemonium"). I think he may have been reading a chapter from his new book:

"Conveniently, he’s grouped them into a chapter, How to Be Famous, in which he struggles with the etiquette of meeting Jerry Stiller and Justin Timberlake (don’t say “Good morning”), the indignity of being Gawker Stalked on the subway (don’t wear brown jeans), and the pandemonium he accidentally causes at the SoHo Apple store while shopping for a computer cable. At that moment, Hodgman realizes, “I am like a mascot waking around a theme park.”

  • Found the "This American Life" link (he starts about 8 minutes into the recording):

Act One. I'm Not a TV Star, but I Play One on TV.

This American Life contributor John Hodgman was unexpectedly chosen to be in a series of high-profile Apple Computer commercials (he plays a PC). He tells the story of what happens when celebrity hunts you down and finds you...on your living room couch, pushing 40, and a couple sizes larger than you want to be. John was recorded live during our "What I Learned from Television" tour, before a sold-out audience at Royce Hall in Los Angeles.
  • Oh yeah, I'm totally going to stalk him. I still have yet to see the They Might Be Giants guy, he supposedly lives around here.
  • He was also in one of the Flight of the Conchords episodes. He was the guy from the greeting card company that was thinking about using a FOTC song on a chip to put into a card. It was the episode where Bret had dreams about David Bowie.
  • John Hodgman spoke at Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago, and at one point I remember him talking about some of his favorite eats and whatnot in the slope. I got the impression he probably lives more south slope-ish.

The guy from They Might Be Giants lives down in Windsor Terrace if I remember correctly.
  • He's one of the few famous people who live here that I haven't spotted yet.

He was funny on FOTC. I love that show. A lot of interconnection as Kristen Shaal (Mel on FOTC) has done guest spots on Daily Show and she's a sloper too (I did see her walking around)

    South Slope.
  • I'm still waiting to see Bushemi. Why do I never see these people!?! Where's Cabaki?? I need stalker tips.

I almost walked into him this past sunday as I was coming out of La Bagel Delight. He looks very unassuming, you probably have passed him a million times without knowing it.

BTW- one of my children like La Bagel Delight, I'm partial to Bagel Hole.
  • The La Bagel Delight pastrami sandwich with bacon on hero is freaking amazing!

    South Slope.

On [redacted] - I know which building but figure he has the same right to privacy as I do 8)

Oops - sorry - thought I was being vague enough...
  • I ran into him at Russo's last summer. He has amazing calves.

OMG the one where Brett jumps on top of the desk and pulls it out! Thats one of my faves!

That's the one...it is really funny. Also in that episode, when Mel stops them on the street to help build up Bret's ego, they are standing in front of Elora's on 17th St & PPW, so that particular episode has a lot of neighborhood connections.
  • There is a section of his most recent book "More information than you require" that talks about living in the slope.
  • i have heard, through reliable sources, that hodgeman has been spotted at steinhoff.

i saw turturro once on his stoop. buscemi came to our stoop sale, over on 5th, but i was napping when he stopped by.

i've never seen the guy from we must be giants. i saw jennifer connely once and didn't recognize her till she was pointed out to me. never saw any gyllenhall (and this sadly includes jake, my boyfriend), but i've seen rory kennedy, and that woman who plays eames on law and order.

i saw michelle williams and her daughter matilda at an estate sale in fort greene.

and i saw oliver platt on 8th ave once.

    i think that's it.
  • wow that's so cool i love seeing him on t.v
  • I saw him when I was eating lunch at Shopsin's last week. The camera really does add 15-20 pounds!
  • He just better hope that he never runs into Obamanut
  • Jonathan Coulton lives in the slope, too.
  • can i please interject here: what is it with these men and the facial hair. SHAVE
  • Yay, this is fun..what other celebs live in our hood??
  • i saw maggie gyllenhall at gorilla once - she was standing behind me in line and i didn't even realize it (i'm always in my own little world) until she started giving her order and i was like "um, i know that voice, how do i know that voice"

also saw john tuturo on his stoop once a few years back.

oh and paul bettany - saw him randomly all the time walking up from 5th ave area with friends at night (prob after a dinner or drinks)...anyway, if i had a nickel for every time i almost literally walked into him i'd be able to afford the mans he and jennifer sold.

but my big sighting was that guy from 'tell me you love me' - Luke Kirby, i've seen him a couple times and the first time i must've stared at him for a solid few minutes waiting for the crosswalk basically thinking how hot this dude is until i realized who he was. cue swoon.

but yeah i feel like everyone's always out and about at least from how many times my friends have spotted celebs but i like the fact that i rarely notice and they blend it. do we really want that typical hollywood type with an entourage and looking too cool for school trolling around our streets?
  • I've seen most of them:

turturro, connelly and bettany (gone now), buscemi, kristen schaal, john ventimiglia...haven't seen hodgeman or gyllenhall yet

    Has anyone seen him?
saw him, pushing a stroller, on the corner of 10th street and 7th avenue this summer.
  • I also saw Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode twice in PS (pretty far south on 7th both times). I heard a rumor he's living here. Before I even heard that, he made my head turn because he had rock star leather on in the middle of a sunny/warm day.

Then I saw him in front of of his kid's school (I know a teacher there) in Manhattan and was sure that he was the one I passed twice on the street.

Anybody know if he's a resident now?
  • I used to see Katherine Erbe fairly frequently (Law & Order Criminal Intent) - though not so often recently...
  • My ex saw Hodgman a couple of times in or near the 7th Ave. F station.

My only Slope celeb sighting was Morgan Spurlock and family walking past my place heading for the park last July 4.
  • i forgot that spurlock lived here.
