Allan Gerovitz at Prudential Douglas Elliman. He has a very, uh, quirky personality (read slightly insane) but he is hands down the most connected agent in CH/CG/BH. He will find you an apartment that you like or die trying.

I've never really had any success with the street wandering approach, but if you want to try I would just pick an area you want to live and start strolling. I will say I rarely see For Rent signs out anymore. Good luck! -
Go into bakeries (and make a purchase) and talk to the person behind the counter. Compliment the neighborhood and tell them your looking to move into the nabe but are having a hard time finding a place. If they like you, they may refer you to someone they know who is looking for a tenant or a roommate.
Go into laundromats and look at the postings on bulletin boards, as well. However, in C.G. people want to know what they might be renting to. Don't be afraid to strike up converstions with complete strangers, as noted above. That's how you will find the "hidden treasures" not on CL.
Good luck! -
Thanks! I'll be doing all of the above!
And danielle, it's a good thing my BF lives in the nabe: I already know the folks at his local bakery and laundromat! -
I adore Frank at Brownstone Realty on Court St. I've moved a heck of alot in Brooklyn and he's the best realtor I've come across. Totally honest, nice and helpful. He's also a neighborhood guy. Good luck!

I agree with VoodooNYC...
Allan is the best I've ever worked with. I found him through this posting last week. To make a short story even shorter... we've already signed the lease on one of the places he had shown us. He def has some of the best places to see in the area. To top it off, he's pretty fun to be around while looking. Slightly nutty, yes, but also totally professional. -

Awesome, glad that worked out for you. Slightly nutty is an understatement, but very entertaining and a really nice guy. Most importantly seriously connected to apartments in CG and CH. Also for those of you still looking, don't rely on the apts. he has on the website, he never updates and usually has a lot more inventory than what's listed. Welcome to the hood, Johnny!
