What's it like in Bed-Stuy???

Subject: What's it like in Bed-Stuy???

I am looking to move and noticed a lot of availability in the Bed-Stuy area. What is the neighborhood like now? I'm a female moving with a baby girl so safety is a priority as well as daycare and transportation. I've noticed a lot of new apartments and brokers mostly have listings for there. Are they trying to bring new people into the neighborhood? thanks!

  • right now it is freeeeeezing
  • Where are you moving in Bedford Stuyvesant.. This is the largest neighborhood in North Brooklyn from B'way to Classion to Atlantic to Flushing. Stuyvesant Heights, Ocean Hill and Bedford Corners are going to have your historic brownstones and families where in the north near myrtle has a totally different feel with hipsters and.old school Bed-Stuy residence ... I think the best place to raise kids in BS is south BS going towards Fulton Street btw Bedford and Patchen...
  • welcome sweett. If you read back through the pages of posts there are quite a few helpful ones that discuss different blocks and areas of the large neighborhood we know as Bed-Stuy.

    Good luck.

    That's freakin' funny. :lol::lol:
  • Yeah, south bed-stuy / stuyvesant-heights is the area i like the best. my second choice is the western area around classon/franklin. i did not like the northern area along broadway, and am less familiar with central/eastern
  • I still don't understand why most people like better South Bed-Stuy. I guess it is a matter of preference. I personally like better North Western Bed-Stuy (below Lafayette Avenue): proximity to the G line, new restaurants on Franklin or Bedford, Tiny Cup, ... Proximity to Williamsburg.
  • I am with tennisfan. I like all areas, but I love it here.

I live near the Bed Nostrand G stop. There are several day cares in the area--home and business ones. There are generally people out and about. Proximity to Myrtle Avenue, to Fulton St. You are on near bus lines like the B44, B38. There is a real sense of community. People are friendly and know one another. I have a child who goes to school in the area. I feel safe. Check it out.

And it is freezing. Kevin_on_putnam is right!

OP, my landlord has a great apartment in this area if you are interested in checking it out. I am not sure of your timeline, but it's on the market now for rent. He's a great landlord, no fee, recently renovated place. I'd love more parents around. :)
  • Subject: thank you!

Thank you for the feedback everyone.

isla - I am going to check out what my commute would be like on that line. You're right, its always nice to have other parents around.
  • There are a lot of kids in this area. It's definitely family-oriented. The parents are all great. There are 2 daycares on my street and one on the cross street alone. It's one block from the train and the bus stops.

hopstop.com would give an idea on commuting. I have lived here for almost 3 years, and I commute to the midtown on the west side (used to be the UWS, sorry for the typo!). I generally give myself 45 minutes door to door. I have made it to Union Square in 25 minutes, catching the trains right! But that happens once in awhile only. Rush hour is a lot easier than mid day of course.

Let me know if you want to talk to my landlord. He's great, one of the best I have had. I am not sure if he has a Craigslist listing up right now or not. I'll ask. It's a 2 bedroom in a rowhouse with hard wood floors.
  • i live just west of the apparent bed-stuy/clinton hill border - right by the g - and think it is a great area. there are a lot of kids in the area. if you are close to the g or the c, transportation - esp at rush hours - is pretty reliable and quick. our commutes are much shorter than we expected when we moved (and than they were when we lived in ft greene).

i don't have kids, so have no idea about daycare. there is a shop (again, western edge/clinton hill): http://stillhipbrooklyn.com/ ... it seems like there is a nice community of parents and young children.
  • It's scary and bleak and depressing here. I can't wait to move. I hope I survive until I can move. I wouldn't recommend this area to anyone. SCARY.
I am going broke from taking taxis home because it is too dangerous to walk from the train. There is nothing to eat, nowhere to go, not safe to go anywhere. People give me hostile looks on the street like they want to kill me. I really hate it here.

MOD NOTE: ashley is posting from the same IP as cafeaulait, who some of you may remember from previous trolly turns on this board.

I moved to Bed-Stuy from Queens less than a year ago and I have to say it has really grown on me. BK is definitely cooler than Queens, but the neighborhood didn't seem as safe when we 1st moved here. I live near Monroe & Nostrand and have definitely seen a slow yet steady change in the type of people who live here, hang here, etc. and getting more & more safe every month. We are a young black family w/ a toddler, but I would recommend this area to people of all colors. I have seen it become more & more diverse since I've been here. Ok so there aren't as many cool restaurants and bars as in Fort Green & Parkslope, but our rent is cheaper and we're next door to those 'hoods! I think Bed-Stuy has the potential to get tons more cool restaurants & places to hang and most likely will, especially with all the new condos going up on Bedford and other places.

Ok so this is actually why this post attracted me: I am looking for a new daycare for my daughter. I am in between the A & G but have always taken the A since it is closer to my daughters daycare, but am willing to take the G. Isla can you give me more details about the daycares you know of?? Thanks!
  • i am so glad I found this forum! I grew up in Bed-Stuy and moved to Queens and now I am planning to move back to Bed-Stuy!

One question I have. I have a VERY shy teenage son and just about everywhere we lived there were very, very few teenage boys in the neighborhood. Any suggestions for a club (not PAL) or group activities that he may be able to join?

    TIA!
  • Maybe you can sign him up for programs at the Y or a martial arts class.
  • There are programs at the Y (including the Sharks swim team), Little League (for kids up to 16) at Thompkins Park, basketball at Concord and Cornerstone Churches, and the Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance Corps always is looking for young volunteers to train.

If he's more of a musical type, there is the Brooklyn Steppers or the Approaching Storm marching bands. If he's into spoken word, send him down to Sista's Place or Solomon's Porch for poetry. I'd also suggest that if you are religious, you consider joining a church. Many of the local ones have active youth groups and activities such as Boy Scouts, youth choir, dance ensemble, etc.

There are also hoards of non-profits and community based organizations that are always looking for volunteers. I know that my folks used to send me over to the Urban League to stuff envelopes and answer phones. All of the organizations I listed above are also looking for older teens to help run programing for younger kids.

Your best bet is to try and meet some other parents of teens. They will be a good source of information.
  • Thanks!!!! I am really looking forward into getting him involved in something productive!

Jya-Jya, I pmed you back. However, I thought you lived closer to the G. I emailed my girlfriend as she has a better line of daycares south of the G. I will send post a list soon. It's a good resource to have.
