Computer Repair Recommendation?

There is a good computer technician located inside the Mail Boxes of Park Slope - 328 Flatbush Avenue next to the Park Slope Sports Club. Ask for Armandine 718.789.3770. Her company is called Information Technologies Services that used to be above Kings Pharmacy on Flatbush Avenue.
Hope this helps. -
There's a computer repair spot on Vanderbilt. I forget which block, but between St. Marks and Park Place... used them a couple of times. A good deal. Guy looks like Serpico.

Is that the place next to Soda that's always open weird hours of the night? -
I have heard nonspecific, but bad things about that place that's next to Soda. :?

I would check with Armandine. I took a "dead" laptop to ITS when it was above Kings Pharmacy... they showed me the trick to get it working, right there on the spot, no charge.

I'm the neighborhood Mac guy -- no, I don't do Windows (to wit: "UNIX for stability, Macs for creativity, Windows for Solitaire").
I've never liked the place next to Soda. Only been into the place on Sterling on the other side of Wash (kitty corner from Tom's) once, seemed nice. -
Yeah... right by Soda. It's open weird hours of the night because he teaches teenagers and adults how to build and repair computers. Kind of a community computer ed center.

If you purchased the laptop with a credit card, don't forget to see if you have any "buyer's assurance" benefits that you can use to save yourself some money. My laptop motherboard sizzled about 3 months after it was out of warranty; happily, Amex adds a year to whatever manufacturers warranty exists and they covered the repairs. Amex Buyers Assurance is 1-800-225-3750 if that's helpful. I don't know about the others.
Thanks in advance -
Thanks for the suggestions. I spoke with Armandine at Information Technologies Services, but she wouldn't be able to do that kind of repair. She is going to see if there is someone she can refer.
Would anyone know of a reputable company in the extended area? I spoke with Dell and they want to charge over $500 for the repair. From what I understand, it is just a part that needs to be soldered. -

i gotta ask... what do you think is wrong with it? soldering isn't something that has to be done very often, and I think you might have trouble finding someone willing to do it. might be easier to replace the part instead. but thats also hard to say without knowing what you think is wrong with it.

Try Man and Machine on John St. downtown. They've done right by me.

It is a problem with the power supply connection to the motherboard. I don't know much about hardware, but from what I've read it is a pretty common problem with this model.
I think Dell wants to replace the whole motherboard, but some people are saying it can been fixed be soldering the piece. -

yeah, it actually is a common problem with notebooks in general, not just with Dell (although there are a lot of us techies out there that call them "Hell" for a good reason). And yeah, I would disagree with Dell... a full on motherboard replacement in a laptop is rare.... versus the jack getting loose over years of plugging and unplugging. The good news is a new jack usually runs like $15 and you can probably find a company to do it for like $150...

you really need to find a laptop repair place tho. Not just any computer company is going to do it for you because most notebooks have almost 40 screws you have to remove to take it all apart and if you don't know what you are doing, its tricky. So a lot of tech companies don't repair them. Your best bet might be a place you mail it to.
Wish I knew someone local. I'm a freak and I just tend to do it myself. (hence my iPod awaiting a screwdriver)
