Just bumping this up. Any more voters?
Looks like Taro's winning so far (although it's pretty close). Your vote counts! -
okay. who wants to have dinner at either taro or gen tonight?
-
7p.m. のまわりの火曜日夜はすばらしいタロイモのレストランで反対寿司でomakase を発注する快適な時常にである。

Mrs. Carnivore and I are going to Applewood tonight (first time). Next time, we're definitely in! -

Japanese characters that didn't translate so well in code? I've got to take a raincheck too. I do want to see what the "best sushi in PH!" fuss is about. -

okay, well then. fine! no one wants to eat with me except (maybe) mystery question mark person. now to decide if I want Gen or Taro ...
I think I'll go with Gen. feel free to stalk me. -
I was trying to be clever. I also forgot to post the translating link. In short it says omakase style sushi at Taro around 7pm sounds fine.

ahh. hm. Taro *is* right by the train. maybe I'll go there. sushi bar, here I come! -

Taro does indeed rock the house. I love that place so much. Darn it, it's been weeks since I've eaten there. Now I want dinner there tonight! Argh!
so, all y'all Gen lovers need to convince me!

Carnivore,
Points for you! Taro was awesome.
Still like Gen but...... Taro! -
Go to Taro on Friday and Ssaturday nights. They get mainstream Japanese stuff like raw octopus and Japanese baby snapper, etc.
P.S. has anyone seen my hood? I lost it along with one of my cats. -
I just want to also put in a word for Taro's asparagus tempura rolls, for you vegetablarian types, or just carnivores who like asparagus. They're not listed on the menu but they ALWAYS have them. Yum!
-
their tofu/whitefish soup was absurdly good (I reheated the remaining portion later Tuesday night). I wonder if they have other awesome tofu dishes - I'm a carnivore who adores tofu.
-
I just tried their ( Taro ) grilled shitake mushroom appetizer. Very, very good. I think I shall go again tonight and make a sushi hog of myself.

Subject: taro
I got really sick in there once. should I hold it against them? -
It's just the nature of eating raw fish at a Japanese restaurant -- every so often you're going to get a bad cut.
Now, if you've been sick more than once from their food -- that's a different story, imho. -
yes, Taro Taro Taro
now can we get an AMEN from the Geido holdouts? -

lol........I disagree with this. If you go to a place that knows what they're doing, this should never happen.
I'd even go as far as to say that this is the mark between good and bad sushi restaraunts. -
Actually, how does one know the person got sick from Taro? There are a million and one ways to come down with something in NYC.

I went on a long walk today, and I realized that Taro was the place that I thought looked a little dubious from the other side of Flatbush. It's just something about the storefront... maybe it's the surrounding buildings... anyway, it looks like a little hole-in-the-wall where I'd be likely to get sick, but with all of the positive feedback, I guess that I'll have to get over it and give it a try!

I understand where you might get that impression, because you're right - it's such an odd location on a kind-of run-down block. However; Taro's awesome. Give it a shot.

thank you all for the taro recommendations. the gf and i had lunch there the other day, and it was fan-freakin-tastic.
extra shout-out to apollonia for the asparagus tempura roll heads up. my, oh my.
i thought the eel/avocado was unusually nice as well.
i haven't voted yet b/c i haven't tried gen or geido, but taro's looking hard to beat.... -
taro -- best kept secret in brooklyn? i don't know how. it's too good and too cheap and everyone is too nice. it's like.. heaven.
Granted I've only tried Geido and Yamato around here -- but from the looks of it, none of the other ones are even worth my time or my palate.
However, I noticed that fuji-san on seventh ave got revamped, renamed and repriced and at least looks decent. Does anyone have a report from the front? -
I voted for Taro in this poll a month ago or so.
I don't understand the 14 votes for Geido. Don't get me wrong, I like Geido. I like the katsu, the soups, the specials, and the funky vibe and good service -- but this poll was about SUSHI -- that is raw fish on top of rice and maki rolls. In that category, IMO Taro outperforms Geido.

Some of the places with no votes are very good . . .
Tamari on Fifth Ave at Union has excellent rolls (no sushi)
and great udon soups
but you only get one vote so . . . Taro!
depends on where you are when you're hungry
I love Blue Ribbon Sushi, but it's in a different $$ stratosphere -

to straighten out this mess........rolls, "fish-on-rice" sushi, and "fish-by-itself" are ALL sushi. -

balls!
fish by itself is sashimi. -
I went to Kiku again last night and I second and third my vote.
Mind you, I love rolls so that what I have. They have this Kiku roll that is Chilean Sea Bass, ginger and avocado with fried onions on top. They also have these "dragon" rolls. I had the golden dragon which was eel and avocado with mango on top. Check it out!!!!
