can I do Fort Greene on $1100-$1200? — Brooklynian

can I do Fort Greene on $1100-$1200?

I sadly had to leave Brooklyn three years ago for work, but now I have the opportunity to move back. I know that Brooklyn has changed a lot since I left so I don't have a good sense of what's a realistic rental situation. I want a 1BR for $1100 to $1200 (would settle for a large JR 1BR if neccessary). Must be rent stabilized and have hardwood floors. Could you help me out and give me a sense of where I should realistically be looking? The more specific the better

Thank you in advance!

  • most people read the Prospect Heights board -- it's considered spammy to post the same question on multiple boards
  • i'm thinking this may be possible if you go north of myrtle onto park or flushing, even though this may not be prime fort greene, some RE brokers may think so.
  • In my opinion a 1 BR for $1100-1200 isn't likely. My girlfriend and I were looking last July and we ended up taking a $1400 1BR just inside Clinton Hill b/c it was a nice apartment with a private back yard.

I doubt you'll find a 1BR for that price in prime Ft Green. As someone said, maybe if you look a little North of Myrtle or South of Atlantic you could find something.

We've been perfectly happy in Clinton Hill (Hall Street). All the shops & restaurants in Ft Greene are in walking distance, and we live on a cute block of townhouses right around the corner from supermarket/restaurants/bars.
  • Subject: Possible, but you'd have to be lucky

I live in "prime Fort Greene" (between Lafayette and DeKalb) in a one-bedroom at $1200. I waited and waited for something like this to show up, practically had a nervous breakdown in the process, came to the open house 20 minutes earlier, and prepared a whole packet--paystubs, references, "rental resume," etc. I did have to pay a one-month broker's fee. The apartment is not spick-and-span renovated, and the bedroom is pretty small, but it's a floor-through in a narrow brownstone. So yes, it is possible, but be prepared to be stressed.
