Sunshine (a new West Indian restaurant on Nostrand)
Hi,
I just moved to the neighborhood about 5 months ago (and yes, for the record, I'm white). I live on Union between Brooklyn and New York. I love it here, although sometimes the slowness of the 3/4 trains (especially at night or on weekends) drives me crazy. Has anyone tried this restaurant yet? I haven't, but chatted with the owner who seems really sweet.
Also, any other restaurant recommendations are welcome. I've tried Tavern and am a regular at Bagels and High Tea, but I'm always looking to help out local businesses, since I think that's a great thing for any neighborhood.

I've heard Cafe 400 on Nostrand between Park and Sterling is pretty good. I'm actually going to try it next week, so I'll report back then. Other than that, there are a limited number of sit down places. I've eaten at the diner on Nostrand and right across from that big apartment complex. Its great for breakfast diner food, but never had lunch or dinner there. My locksmith and his wife are the owners so I've tried to make a point to support them whenever I get a chance. Tavern is a favorite of ours and David is trying to open a couple of additional eateries which should provide some more variety
Plenty of good chinese and west indian (although my fave Jerkin Chicken is now gone
). Try Glorias on Nostrand and Sterling, take out only, but really good food. Cheffys at Park and Nostrand is also good and while you can eat there I'd probably take out as your are fairly close and there isn't a great deal of space. There is new stuff opening all the time, so I'd encourage you to walk around the nabe and pay attention to boards for other recommendations.
Also, while its not in CH, if you are at the Home Depot on Nostrand try Sugarhill across the street. Its the best Southern/Soul food in this part of Brooklyn and Eddie the owner is an institution having been on that corner with the bar, then club, then restaurant for over thirty years. The restaurant is nice and a hidden gem. -
Here almost a month now so far:
Really like Tavern,
Feeding Tree has good jerk chicken w/ beans and rice
Gloria's and Exquiste have good take away
Kingston Pizza where you can get slices in CH! ( Kingston between St. John's and Lincoln) It's not great but it will do.
New discovery:
Imohotep's. Really good vegan food, ie... great fake beef, tofu, seasoned brown rice & beans, okra.........
Really nice owner and clean friendly space
Let us know about Cafe 400 I walked by it tonight about 7:00 and it sounded pretty happening. -
The entire Nostrand strip is ripe with deliciousness. Try Nick's spicy beef patty (betw. Park and Prospect), or head to Royal Roti (nr. Dean) for great aloo pies and fantastic roti.
If yer further down Nostrand, try Donuts Luncheonette. (It's right past Empire, methinks). Fresh donughts, old-school ambiance. Good stuff. -
Subject: Kingston Ave
I just discovered some really amazing food on Kingston Ave, south of Eastern Parkway. Crown Bagels has great bagels, and a bit further down is a really excellent butcher that sells roast and friend chicken (as well as very fresh meat--but no pork, of course), fresh salads, and other treats, such as knishes. There is a bakery across the street from the butcher that I haven't tried yet but seems promising. -
I went to sunshine tonight, it was pretty good but you can get a better deal at feeding tree. $8 for a small platter with a piece of fish and two sides.
Howdy, Stranger!
