Where between Wedding Dinner? Advice for UK couple

We are spending a week in NY with 4 friends in March, and we're getting married on 16th March at Borough Hall. We want to get to the office about 1.30 pm and need to wait (for however long) for the ceremony (can't make appointments). We're having dinner at the River Cafe at 6pm. There will be 6 of us -we're late 20's early 30's and this is our third visit to New York.

We want to make sure that we don't drink too much before dinner, but if we don't get out of the office by 3.30-4pm, can you recommend any good cafes/bars in the area?

We don't want anything flashy, just somewhere friendly where we can relax and chat. Thanks for your advice.

to avoid booze, I'd go to Jacques Torres chocolate in DUMBO and have some hot cocoa or coffee.
it's only a few blocks from the river cafe.

if you want a liquor drink without pressure, at the hours you're describing, you could probably go to superfine, also in DUMBO and only a few blocks from the river cafe.

I know its not quite what you were asking for, but I'd say go to the River Cafe's bar if you can be there for sunset -- about ten after 5 this time of year.

Watching the light fade behind the lower Manhattan skyline, and the city's lights gradually come alive, is one of the great pleasures of living here. It is, in a word, magic. Yes, you'll be having dinner there anyway, but get there just that bit earlier and you will be in awe.

Besides, their drink prices will ensure that you don't have too many.

Pete's Waterfront Ale House sounds like what you're looking for. It's very down-to-earth with friendly service - plus, you can walk there from Borough Hall in 7-8 minutes.
