Am I the only person who misses having a fish market in the neighborhood? I can't bring myself to buy fish from the deli on Flatbush ave..

No I wish we had one close by also. Right now I go to Brooklyn's Chinatown. That is one of the two things I want along with a fruit/vegatable market like the ones on Ft. Hamilton Pkwy and 65th Street.

I liked Angel's, but honestly the fish at SeaLand (the place on Flatbush) is just as good and at the same price. There's nothing worth girping over, in my opinion.

Plus at sealand you get a free lemon out of every purchase (wheee!).

Sorry Tony they are too pricey for me and plus I have had a bad experience in that store.

) I have found that the prices vary in different neighborhoods. The reason why I continue to go to Chinatown is because there seems to be more of a selection to chose from.

The fish also seems to cost less in Chinatown too...and it seems more fresh...Sometimes the fish are still alive. I just don't trust the fish at SeaWorld...But, good to know that prices were comparable to the place that closed. I was afraid their fish would be overpriced.

I haven't bought fish at Sealand yet, but it looks reasonably fresh. I usually get it in Chinatown or Whole Foods. It's definitely cheapest in Chinatown, but you have to be a careful shopper, and also kind of aggressive with them. They will often try to "misunderstand" and give you the ratty-looking fish with the opacified eyes, dull scales and foul odor behind the fish you are actually pointing to.

By far, the best place in the neighborhood to get fish is from the vendor at the GAP Green Market, of course. I just wish it was more than once a week!

I buy catfish pretty regularly from Sealand, and haven't had any problems. Something like $7/lb, if I remember correctly.

The Grand Army Plaza green market is held every Saturday morning at the north end of Prospect Park. Local farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, fishermen, etc. sell their goods there. It's like a somewhat smaller, but much less crowded version of the Union Square green market. It's best from spring through autumn (not much growing around here right now). Blue Moon is the fish vendor there, and their stuff is really great, super fresh and local. For the best selection of fish (especially if you want filets of things like sea bass), you have to go early (ideally before 9am).

i buy the fish and shellfish at sealand on flatbush regularly and have not yet had a bad experience. their hours are hard to beat. it's a tad overpriced for what it is, but not horribly, given the location.

however, i am very direct about what i want and use all of my senses when buying. it is not a 'destination' fishmonger by any means. i go to fishtales in the heights when i'm ambitious. or this huge place in bay ridge or the asian markets in bensonhurst.

i had a number of gross experiences at the fishmonger formerly on vanderbilt, so i do not mourn their passage.

Comparing a local fish seller with Chinatown is just ridiculous. Apples and Oranges.

That said.....tell me of this "FISHTALES" place!!!
