appliances and decorative tiles — Brooklynian

appliances and decorative tiles

1. where do people buy appliances? I find myself in the odd position of needing to buy a fridge (I don't have the money to redo my kitchen yet but my fridge is driving berserker). I'd like to buy the fridge from a place that will deliver it, install it, and take away the old one. any ideas?

2. where would I go to buy a decorative ceramic tile? (yes, just one)

  • If you want to stay local, try Big Daddy on 5th Avenue near St Marks Avenue. That store used to be on Flatbush Avenue at St Marks. Or the other places you could try for appliances are Sears on Bedford Ave in Flatbush and PC Richards on Atlantic Ave and Flatbush Avenue.

Bergen Tile( Flatbush Avenue and Bergen St) has a wide selection of tiles.
  • Drimmers has the best selection AND best prices in the NYC area.

    http://www.drimmershousewares.com/default.htm

    They deliver too.

Best tile is Artistic Tile in NYC. They deliver as well. http://www.artistictile.com

    Good luck!
  • I'll second Drimmers for appliances. We got a refrigerator, dishwasher and stove from them last year and they were very easy to work with.

And we got our tiles from Bergen Tile. Their prices seemed good compared to a bunch of smaller tile stores I visited in the area.
  • home depot will deliver and remove your old appliances and their prices are pretty good, if you don't have any conscientious objections to shopping in a "big box" store.

personally i love Ann Sacks tile; I'm pretty sure they would sell it to you in one-offs: http://www.annsacks.com; i believe they have a showroom in manhattan

i've also bought tile samples on ebay

This guy used to own a big appliance store on Atlantic but he sold the business and now does it only via phone/online. I did a lot of searching around for a new fridge and stove that I just bought and he had the best price and was willing to beat any other price out there.

Even better, he's Jersey based so there's no sales tax and delivery was free, I got it the next day.

I don't think they'll take your old one away but you can probably get the delivery guys to haul it downstairs for you if you give them a few extra bucks.

Keep in mind when removing a fridge you need to schedule an appt. with the Dept. of Sanitation for them to come and remove the freon. They usually have you place it out one day before your trash day so they will come remove the freon, tag it, and it will be picked up the following day with the trash collection.
  • Having just been through this myself I have to say that there is soo much competition out there for appliances that you can pretty much make deals with anyplace you go. I bought all my appliances from Home Depot because I received 10% off for opening a card on the spot plus they were running a 12 month interest free special, plus GE was was running an additional special (for every $500 you purchase on a GE appliance you receive a $100 Home Depot card - which as some of you know I pretty much live in ;) ), plus free delivery and if I had to remove any old appliances they take it away and install the new one.

If you prefer PC Richard all you have to do is go there and tell them Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, etc. is giving me this deal, how can you make it sweeter?

If you do go to a small local place I suggest, if you can, use cash. Most of the time they will take $ off the price and they usually dont charge taxes.

Be careful about the small local places - ask them if there is a problem with the appliance will they replace it or will the manufacturer replace it. If they do fine if not then you are looking at an additional waiting time of about 2-3 weeks if the appliance doesn't work.

NOW - on to tiles - exactly what type are you looking for? Ann Sachs has BEAUTIFUL tiles (a little pricey for me) but her discount tiles are really lovely too (check out her website).
I have found that Bergen tile is nice for your day-to-day floor and wall tiles and they are very, very knowledgable. They dont have many decorative tiles in stock but can order what you like There is also Bella Tile on 1st Avenue and I think 17th or 16th Street. I LOVE their selection of glass tiles and they have their own factory around the corner. The store told me a particular tile was $10 a square foot but the factory guy said $8 a square foot.
Someone else mentioned Artistic Tile and I heard they were pretty good too but I have never used them
  • if home depot takes away the fridge, do I still have to deal with the dept. of sanitation? I'm exceedingly lazy - this whole process can't take too long. ;)

with respect to tile - a friend requested a single tile from people coming to her bday party so she can make a mosaic table. so I think I'm looking for a moderately pricey pretty or cute or interesting or funky tile. like, something I couldn't possibly afford to use in my bathroom. :)
  • another question - does anyone know someone who can help me design a new kitchen? I don't have the money to do more than replace the fridge right now but I would like to have a plan for the space so I can price it, make sure the new fridge will work in the space, etc.

I am almost positive that Home Depot takes them away and does not leave them curbside ditto for PC Richard.

If that is the case then I definitely suggest Ann Sachs or getting a plain white tile and designing it yourself - oh sorry I forgot who I was talking to :lol::lol::lol::wink:

If you want I can give you a hand designing your kitchen I just finished mine.
  • FYI, on the Dept. of Sanitation thing it's really easy if you can't get someone t take it away. You can set up an appointment online at www.nyc.gov, navigate to the DOS from the dropdown on the left. It's not even really an appt, they just give you a day to have it out there. Once you have that just have the new stuff delivered the same day.

We just redid a bathroom. We were looking for a nice tile to use as trim, we tried nemotile, but the tiles we ordered were no longer made (after waiting 6 weeks). The Ann Sachs store has great stuff but pricey. Both Nemo and Ann Sachs are great places to look. I found a beautiful tile at Ann Sachs, then we found a knock off at SohoStudio for less than half the price. They are really nice and they have tons of free samples! Easy subway access inBrooklyn.

They are religious Jews so they are closed on the Sabbath.

Drimmers was cheap but they would not give me my receipts. Really cheap though!
  • Had the following bad experience at Drimmers: Bought a fridge there about two years ago. Told the salesman I did not want the extended warranty. When I looked at the bill, I noticed I had been charged for it. I called and asked the salesman to remove the charge, as I did not want the warranty. He told me he would, but never gave the money back. So, two direct lies.

Price was pretty good, and they did deliver when they said they would, though.

Personally, I like J&R on 7th ave. Haven't compared the prices with other places directly, but they're a family-owned neighborhood business, and very friendly and helpful, especially if you deal with Ralph.

I'm not even sure that Big Daddy's is still around - didn't they go out of business? Isn't the owner trying to sell tbe building as a 'development site'?

you might want to look on apartmenttherapy.com
they had a kitchen contest last year that had great ideas . . . many helpful people obsessed with fridges and backsplashes . . .

some places sell single (unique, pretty) tiles as coasters
[hey, did I just write a personal ad for a coaster?]
on Fifth Ave in the Slope, there's the Mexican store on the east side of the street at . . . I dunno, Lincoln
and Cog and Pearl at Sackett for fancier and even more beautiful artist made things
or you could cleverly scrounge one up from a dumpster - a hunk of NYC octagonal bathroom tile would be cool
  • Go to J&R Television on 7th Avenue bet Pres. and Union. They deliver, instal and remove and if you don't see anything you like on the floor then ask the owner (Ralph) to order you a specific model. For decorative tile try Country Floors on E.16th street bet 5th Ave and Union Sq. in Manhattan. They have a very nice selection and they sell singles. I bought some beautiful plaster mosaics from them for my backyard. Artistic has beautiful tile as well (5th Ave bet E16th and E 15th) as does Nemo on E.21st bet Park Ave and 5th Ave. Go to Country Floors first though.

I second J&R. I happened to buy the extended warranty from Drimmers. What a waste of money. It takes three weeks just to get a phone call though and back to GE (they handle most extendeds) and then another two weeks to get a call from the service people who won't show as promised anyway.
  • I too have had good experiences with J&R. They take my air-conditioners out each fall, store them and clean them (thus allowing me to clean my windows and skipa drafty window in the winter) for $150 each. It's a big deal as one of my units is HUGE.

I keep calling them to ask about dishwashers and then being unable to decide which one to get. THey're very patient.

I've dealt with Ralph and Bill. They'll always beat your best price. 718-638-3040
  • Oh, and Big Daddy is, indeed, no longer with us.

J and R does not have much of anything on the floor. I'd go to PC Richards to actually look at anything.

There have an outlet located in Brooklyn. Check hours first, they are not open on Saturdays. And they have tons and tons of FREE samples!

    Nice folks as well.
  • LOWES LOWES LOWES for appliances, great service!! (Do you really want to deal w/ company that pays lousy resigning exec 200 mil? Home Depot that is)

PM me and I will give you 3 recommendations for very reasonably priced designers. Ikea & Lowes will also plan out your kit. for free.....
( i am an interior designer - 20+ years in retail design.)
  • People, I can't take issue with your frankness (at least you are not pretending to be your own satisfied customers, as others have done!), but please remember to keep advertising in the classifieds area.
  • I second Steve at appliancesbuyphone.com. We got all of our appliances from him. They can usually deliver in 1-2 days, but you need to know what you need/want since it is only a warehouse and not a showroom.
  • Want to second suggestion of J&R Television. We have bought many appliances there over the years and have always been happy with them, installation, etc was good. Two benefits are supporting local merchants and they are conveniently located on 7'th Avenue in Park Slope. Also a personal prejudice- don't buy GE, their products fall apart in a couple of years.
  • alafairnadia, what kind of tile are you seeking? flat or with some designs actually made in the clay? colorful? what prices are you looking to pay?
  • I second SoHoAppliances.com. Got their number from BStoner and was in the market for appliances. I DID compare their prices with 4 other sellers and they were the cheapest. Delivery was next day and it was a pleasure dealing with Levi. Just my 2cents
