Tearing up the street on Underhill
So I asked one of the workers what all the concrete-cutting and pipe-laying was about on Underhill. He said they were going to be burying some kind of electrical cables, but he wasn't sure whether it was power, telecommunications, or what. Dare we hope for some cable TV competition in the nabe? Or maybe it's expanded DSL access for some of the blocks where it isn't available...
Does anyone know for sure what's going on?

Where on Underhill? Is it around the playground?

I think btwn Sterling & Park. at least, there was some construction stuff going on there when I was walking home tonight

It actually extends from Park to St. Johns. I think that the truck that was parked today by the old laundry place on Underhill between St Johns and Lincoln is involved in the project.

they were putting a gigantic concrete box into the sidewalk this AM. this is on underhill, btwn sterling & park.

That's an overflow basin for a sewer, they're replacing sewer lines. Some of them are over 100 years old. The replaced them in my old neighborhood (boreum hill) in the 80's. -
That can't be all they're doing. I was looking closely at some of the pipes they're burying today, and some of them are clearly labled "CON-ED".

yeah, I don't think it's new sewer lines either. Maybe a repair job, but they tore up all the streets in the neighborhood a couple of years ago, and replaced all the sewer lines. This was nice, as our basement used to flood on a yearly basis. One year it was three feet deep. Other houses had five feet.
Looks like they've painted lines across the street, but they do seem to lead to the sewer grates on the corner, so maybe sewer-related after all. -
