I have been meaning to post this for awhile, but I am curious as to your opinions. I have had this discussion with various friends and neighbors, and figured I'd toss it out to people I don't know.

So, I am very good about cleaning up after my dog - ALWAYS! However, I noticed that many people whose dogs are curbed and go in the street do not bust out their plastic baggies. Also, as we usually walk along roads with trees planted in stamp sized patches of dirt, it seems that if the dog goes on the dirt, not the sidewalk, people just leave it.

So, what's your take? If my dog goes in the dirt next to a tree (which he often does), do I need to continue cleaning it up or can I leave it there? I am inclined to say clean it up, but apparently many disagree (at least in my neighborhood).

Just curious...

You clean it up. I always clean up after the mutt and he's trained to curb.

I agree , it should be picked up.

Stepping in dog poop is gross and so is having to see it laying around and smelling it.

Definitely pick it all up. And don't toss the bag into someone's home trash cans!

If you want to have a dog, you have to take ALL of the responsibility that comes with it, meaning picking up poop and carrying to public or your home trash. Just my opinion.

Another thing that ticks me off is people who let their dogs pee on peoples fences/front gardens/stoops. The curb or a hydrant is never that far away, so why let it pee where people sit or work to keep plants. (I have a dog and think it's not that hard to do this. I'm not just bitching about something I don't have experience with.)

Ok, I feel somewhat vindicated. I have always cleaned up after the little guy, and now I won't feel so bad when I give people nasty looks for leaving it in the dirt.

I've noticed dog excrement in the neighborhood too (at least I hope it's dog), which was not a feature of the Queens or Manhattan neighborhoods I've lived in. My view is that dog poop needs to be picked up and disposed of in a trash bin. If it ends up washing into a river or the ocean, it can cause problems with algal blooms. Having said that I believe that storm water in NYC goes through the sewer system so there should be some treatment of it before it gets discharged into the environment. Dogs should also be dissuaded from peeing on stoops etc., encourage them into the gutter. There is nothing quite as offensive as that first warm day in spring when all of winter's dog pee starts to stink.
