This is from WABC:
Four people were killed and others critically injured when a third-alarm fire tore through an apartment building in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn, just blocks away from another fire.
Medical officials say the victims died of serious burns, and some leaped to their deaths, from the blazing four-story apartment building at 1033 Pacific Street.
The fire is believed to have started in a hallway of the first floor and spread through the entire building. Heavy flames tore through the four-story building and out the roof.
Eyewitness News has learned four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Some of them had jumped from the window to escape the flames. Two others were seriously injured in the flames, one critically. Several children were injured when they were thrown out a window.
Meanwhile, another fire burned several blocks away burned through a similar four-story apartment building. Fire shot through the roof of that building. No injuries were immediately reported. -
Well, that's horrible. "Started in a hallway"--that's not a space heater kind of thing. Anyone know anything about that building?
-
horrible.
ch 7 updated that article -
last weekend there was a pair of fires just a bit further down the road
25 residents were left homeless by the blaze.
The Fire Department was investigating the cause of the blaze, which it considered suspicious.
Meanwhile, another fire burned several blocks away burned through a similar four-story apartment building. Fire shot through the roof of that building. No injuries were immediately reported.
"There have been a series of fires that appear at this time to have some similarity, however, we have not made the connection with that," Assistant Fire Chief Howard Hill said.
Pacific Street was closed to traffic between Classon and Franklin avenues, and Classon Avenue was closed between Dean Street and Atlantic Avenue.Feb 20, 2006
BROOKLYN: TWO BUILDINGS DAMAGED IN SEPARATE FIRES Firefighters endured frigid temperatures and wind while extinguishing separate fires that damaged two apartment buildings in Brooklyn late Saturday and early yesterday, the Fire Department said. The first fire, at a six-story brick apartment building at 1710 Carroll Street near Utica Avenue, was reported about 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Four firefighters and one resident were treated for minor injuries and the fire was declared under control at 10:51 p.m., said Firefighter Brian Conlon, a department spokesman. The second fire, in a four-story apartment building at 1440 Pacific Street, was reported at 4:41 a.m. yesterday. Firefighters rescued about 20 residents from the fire, Firefighter Conlon said, adding that seven firefighters and two residents suffered minor injuries. No cause was established in either fire, he said. (NYT) -
I think jayce posted about fires similar to this in CH a few weeks ago. the fire folks being interviewed on the news this AM said that there were several similar suspicious fires recently in the nabe. not cool, building owners/arsonists/freakshows. not cool.

lotsa fires. -
I wondered what the sirens were about.
I wonder if there is any way we could do a collection of like household-type stuff for the people who lost their apartments, and somehow get it to them? One of my earliest school memories was bringing canned goods and a spatula to school in a collection of stuff for people who were burned out in the MOVE disaster. -
Anyone happen to know the cross streets? I'm between Dean and Pacific and I want to know if this fire was near me. I'm surprised I didn't hear the sirens....
Yikes. -
the news this AM said that some of the kids that were dropped out of windows were staying with neighbors across the street. does anyone live on pacific and know these folks?
-

It's between Classon and Grand - the heliocopters woke us up around 5am
Yikes. -
Maybe Tish James's office might be able to provide info on these families and how we could help.
-
It really is sad - Brandon and I are really worried that some of the children were from his school. I have been calling another parent to see if she knows but have not been able to find out anything.

One would hope the red cross responds to disasters like this - anyone know if this is so?

they did when the building by me went up in flames. I knew that the people were taken to a red cross location. But i never heard much beyond that. -

Good, that's at least a start, everyone's so busy with their lives (myself especially) I worry that people who suffer such a huge loss often won't have anyone to help them. -

In addition to fire officials' description of the incident as "suspicious," neighbors said the area has been plagued by fires. "There have been fires up and down Pacific" and other nearby streets, said Michelle Pinckney, 27, who lives in the neighborhood.
Mr. Tulla said Ms. Williams landed in front of the door of his lower level apartment. He described her as "one of the most decent people in the building."
He added that a lot of nonresidents used the halls and stairwells for drinking and sex. He said when a security camera was installed, it was stolen and when the lock on the outside door was fixed, it was quickly broken. "The door to the building is never shut," he said. -
A car just went by with a loudspeaker asking people for leads about the fire. It sounded like a private resident. I didn't catch the number, if they were giving one out.
-
it wasn't a private resident. it was the nypd. it was a crimestoppers van and they had a prerecorded message asking for tips and a $2000 reward for any tips leading to the arsonists.
i drove by today and it was a sad looking scene.
at some point, you have to wonder if the landlords are intentionally setting the fires to get rid of all the tenants so they can either a. collect insurance money or b. sell the building to a developer who can put up condos.
i noticed construction workers working on the condos on pacific close to washington. supreme builders or something. -
Rumor at the corner bodega, according to my neighbor with good ears, is that the target of the fire was a drug dealer that lived in the building... everybody else was just incidental... nice, eh?
-
If that's true, it once again gives lie to the "live and let live" mentality some folks seem to have toward drug dealers. If you see suspicious activity, report it. It's not just the dealing that's the problem, but everything that goes with it.
-
Drug dealers? funny I heard Patti Hagen trying to allude the fires were related to 'developers trying to burn peope out of their homes" on 880 WCBS today -
It is now official Ratner has now been blamed for everything
How sameful to use this tragedy to advance your politica aims. -
are we talking about last night (friday night)?heard the helicopters and could not get back to sleep... strange, but these helicopters seemed over st.johns last night so i just figured, you know.. "crazy lane" CH side of washington.
..or wait, was that thursday night? -
I live opposite of the so-called "crazy lane" on Sterling and the helicopters were really loud over my place, too. (By the way, I think that title is undeserved these days... maybe five years ago...)
-
Yeah, I have no idea if that rumor is true, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was, which is kinda sad itself.
And I was out walkin' the dog at 5:30-5:45, and the choppers were spread out over a pretty good distance- I could see two, but it sounded like there were more. One was hovering near Classon & Park or Sterling, the other was closer to the action, near Classon & St Marks or Bergen. -

just wait until summer, last night someone's PA was blasting the "electric slide" and other amazing music into the late night hours... -
I wrote about this in the CH thread. The friday night copters and sirens were for a fire on Prospect and Nostrand. It was also in an apartment building but it occurred in an apartment, and although it was very smokey, I don't think anyone was injured.

Subject: re: red cross fire assistance
Earlier in this thread, someone asked if the American Red Cross offers assistance to fire victims. They do. You can call 212-787-1000 for more information. Or call 1-800-543-3638 ("LifeNet") -- or just 311.
Howdy, Stranger!
