Cell Phone Tower

I live on the top floor of my small corner building. When I investigated some loud banging on the roof, I was told that a cell phone tower is going up.

My question is - should I expect imminent radiation sickness and hair loss? Or will the only effects be a great signal? Or neither? Will this have any impact on my life at all?

Expect that you'll be the only person in Brooklyn who can get a cell phone signal from his apartment.

I wouldn't worry about the additional radiation exposure from the tower, the roof of the building will likely shield you from that. I think you'll find that you get more radiation exposure from eating bananas, sleeping with another human being, walking through Grand Central Station, taking a commercial airplane flight or just about any other activity. We live in a sea of radiation and can accurately measure it down to even the most miniscule exposure.

You're more likely to die from respiratory disease induced by breathing in the particulates from the oil burning power stations in the metro region and car exhaust.

There are lots of things in the modern world that can hasten your demise, but think of it this way, until about 1930 most children born in urban areas didn't make it to their fourth birthday, and most humans died by the age of 60. So while exposure to the modern world might shorten your life, it will still be materially longer than most people could reasonably expect 100 - 150 years ago.

Unfortunately you might not even get a better cell phone reception for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it might not be your carrier.

Secondly, even if it is your carrier these towers are generally rather directional, outwards rather than directly downwards. There is probably a dead spot right underneath the tower.

On the plus side they are very low power and the inverse square law suggests that even if it were, you don't have to go far to get to low levels.

Further, your landlord receives money from the tower company to put them up this means he is less likely to go bankrupt and evict you.

The worst part is the slow but sure disappearance of the esthetic pleasure in living here, which is what really attracted me when I arrived 20 years ago. Walking up to the roof and seeing the spectacular panorama of Manhattan sealed the deal. I could see a lot of it from my windows as well. Then downtown Brooklyn started to fill up with new condos and offices, and huge slices of the Manhattan view disappeared, including half the Empire State building (Chrysler remains). Now I can't go up to the roof and have a nice picturesque summer dinner, because this tower will take up one whole side of the roof and turn it into into a total eyesore. I hate it!

I asked the guys who are putting up the IMMENSE thing (for a company that's currently big in California, Texas and Florida: Metro PCS. Ads soon to come) how much the landlord is given. It's a 20-year lease at about $1500 - $2000 a month.

They really tore up the building, and there must have been some serious red tape involved, with PS being an official historic district and all.
