Doesn't the YMCA on 9th St. offer this sort of thing?

Is the YMCA on 9th St. the only place that I can take the kids for a lesson?
-
It's the only place that I know of, but perhaps others here will chime in.

We just started going to John Jay on Sundays--it is called Camp Olympia. Only one class in but my two year old had a blast.

Absolutely the best place in the slope AND it's relatively affordable for the neighborhood. Also, their "Sports Camp" is a really great option for the summer. -
Camp Olympia which runs out of the old John Jay High School is the place to go for swimming lessons for young kids. Very affordable and your kids will actually learn to swim. the owner of the camp used to run the swim program at the Y until he left to start this camp. they also have a pretty decent sports camp in the summer.

Though not the Slope, Eastern Athletic across from the Library has swim classes several times a week. We took our son there since he was about 6 months old, and he loves it. He's not challenging Michael Phelps anytime soon, but he can doggy paddle a bit when we let him go (i.e., struggle for survival) and doesn't fear the water.

My wife takes our son to classes at Eastern Athletic. He's 7 months old, but there are kids up to 2 or 3 years old in the same class. They've both enjoyed the classes greatly.
A friend takes her 7 month old daughter to the classes at the Y, and has not really found it too worthwhile. She says they basically get the kids in the water, and then sing kids songs to entertain them. There's not much swimming instruction going on, at least with the littlest ones. -

I'm curious. What kind of "instruction" can you offer to a 7-month-old?

Not to jump Daniel's response, but the kids spend the first several weeks of the term acclimating to the water and doing a variety of parent-assisted exercises -- dunking their heads, learning to kick, jumping off the side, etc. Eventually, the child will swim unassisted between the instructor and the parent for a couple of feet (about 5 seconds, but it seems like an eternity as you try to resist plucking him out of the water). We're taking the winter term off, so my boy was only about 14 months at our last lesson -- so I can't tell you how they advance once they get older

My grandson who is now just 3 has taken swm classes at the Y. The idea for little ones is to get them happy in the water but bewteen the age of 2 and 3 this little guy learned to swim!of course he is being closely supervised but he can swim on his own ( no waterwings) for a lot longer than 5 seconds. It is important to get kids under a year old accustomed to the pool but as they get older the familiarity with being in the water makes them fearless and they can take instruction and really learn to swim by the time they are 3.
So in my opinion.. swimming is great for little ones at the Y or any well suoervised, highly safety oriented place. -
Many years ago, when each of our daughters reached six months of age, we took them to baby swim classes at the Y. We would torpedo them completely underwater a few feet from mom to dad and back. We would drop them from the side of the pool into the waiting arms of the other parent in the water. The infants enjoyed the pool and the games we played. We brought each them back for more when they each turned 2 yrs.
By 3 1/2, my older daughter was jumping off the diving board (not at the Y) into the deep end, and doggie paddling to the ladder on the side of the pool, over and over. She loved the water. She got her scuba certification at 16.
Her sister is equally comfortable in the water, and an excellent swimmer.
I credit the early exposure at the Y. -
Thank you for all the info everyone.

Although not in Park Slope, but close and more affordable -- Brooklyn Swim Center. They accept Toddlers starting with 2 yrs old and very attentive. The water is warm which helps as well.

Hi Guys!
I am certified swim instructor/coach who recently relocated to Brooklyn from California. I work a 9-5 job during the weekdays but am available for private swim lessons on the weekends. Please let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested. I have given lessons for over 8 years and was a swimmer and water polo player for 10 years. I am fully certified as well. I teach all ages, infants through adults as well as give competitive lessons. Please email me to start and I can give you my cell after that.
Thanks!
