i need one of those lights that you install under your cabinets so that you can see what you are doing on the kitchen counter top, you know what i mean?!

as i am basically ignorant when i comes to buying things from stores - or even to what to call this type of fixture - any leads as to where i might find this and cheap and not at evil home depot? obviously, somewhere in or close to PH would be best. don't say ikea. some place local. thanks.

Well Ikea really is best for this, but I think Pintchik might have some of these. I know they carry a limited selection of track lighting, so it would make sense for them to carry this too, but I can't say I remember seeing them. Too bad the original City Lighting is gone. :P

There's a free bus to Ikea that leaves from the Port Authority on the weekends. It runs every 30 minutes....
  • They are called Undercabinet Lights. Most big chains have them. They are definitely at Home Depot and Lowes. Blood Bath & Beyond also have them if you are willing to go there. I suggest the plug in kind as the battery operated ones suck up batteries pretty quickly. I put them in pretty quickly and they are pretty straight forward. Good Luck !

That depends a lot on the kind of fixture. You should be able to get a cheap fluorescent plug-in one for around $20. Incandescent and halogen ones could be a bit more. Very compact halogen ones can be over $50, even at Ikea.
  • I have to second IKEA. As far as lighting goes, they have some stylish (and cheap!) options... but please, hide your wires...

There's a limit to how far it's worth going to hide your wires if you're a renter, though.

You can at least use those 3M cable clips and secure 'em to the underside of the cabinet! Just don't leave 'em hanging out all ghetto-like!
  • got the bed bath & beyond one for $20 and i can add more of the same and the wires connect so no sticking out... although, one wire is going to have to connect in front of everyone's face b/c that is where the outlet is... anyone, really, feel free to buy me an apt. and i will for sure hide my wires then! really, i will!
  • Creative Lighting on Baltic and Court. They give you several options in the kinds of undercabinet lighting and they have a decent variety.
  • Sid's in downtown brooklyn probably has them too, take the B25 or B26 down Fulton.
