Security Gates? — Brooklynian

Security Gates?

Hey, everybody...love the site, been browsing for a bit, but this is my first post...

Our apartment on Underhill was burgled last Thursday, whoever it was pushed the air conditioner in from the fire escape to gain entry. The police gently suggested we were asking for it, and I have to agree (the cops have been nothing but great through this whole stupid ordeal).

We'd like to get some security gates installed asap, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions/postive experiences to share.

Thanks!

  • Can I ask a few questions?

Which floor do you live on?

    About where on Underhill?
  • Underhill between Bergen and St. Marks

4th (top floor) - looks like the came across the roof from a neighboring building, but that's just a guess...

Yikes...I'm on Underhill between Bergen and St. Marks, and I'm on the 3rd floor.

Time to lock the windows, I suppose.
  • That's one hard-working burglar. It's cold! Now if he could only apply that fortitude to getting an actual JOB, he'd be set.
  • We totally need to get unterberg to tell the story about the time his mom was visiting from Kansas and walked into the living room to discover some guy who breaking into his place on Underhill between St. Marks and Prospect Place.
  • just an added tip, if you do have the gates... remember that arms can still reach under the gate so make sure cameras//laptops//wallets//etc. are not just sitting right there!

sounds obvious, but this happened to my friend a few months back.. they just reached under the window gate and got some goods including a small bag with a wallet inside!!
  • Another tip: don't leave things in your coat pockets on the rack near the front door or your keys and wallet at the front door either.

When I lived in DC, we ordered take out. My roommate was short a couple of bucks for the tip and came in the living room to dun me. When he got back to the front door, the delivery guy was going through the coat pockets on the coat rack and, upon further inspection, had my motorcycle keys in his front pockets. The cops had been trying to figure this burglary ring working our nabe (Palisades) for months. Seems the delivery guy was the inside man.

    Oh, yeah:

    LOCK YOU DOORS!
  • tailored for this post:

    GATE YOU WINDOWS.

ha! "Upon further inspection..." Which one of you held him and which one of you worked the midsection?
  • You might want to go the ADT or other alarm route. Gates are fine if you have two exits other than the window to escape a fire. Otherwise the gate may actually be illegal and quite dangerous.

You can get fire department-approved gates that have a latch that's only openable from the inside. They're legal and safe.
  • I initially posted a very flip comment as a joke, but I decided it was bad karma. I've been very lucky since I moved to NYC. Someone attempted to mug me while I was carrying a bouquet of pussywillows and no cash. He ended up taking nothing and told me to "have a nice day". Hell, where I grew up in the sticks our house was broken into five times.

    sorry about the robbery.
I got my security gate from the phone book. I don't remember the name, but I just looked under security gates- and chose one with a large ad. They came to my house- measured the window and then they came about a week later and installed it. It's white with a knob on the inside, so I can open it, but it seems really hard for some one to open it from outside. If you don't own your apartment- isn't your landlord required to put them up?
    good luck :?

  • FYI, here are some pictures of my FDNY-approved gate, so you know what I'm talking about:

I've also seen accordian-style sliding FDNY-approved gates (my old apt in the Bronx had one).
  • On the same topic - our car window was broken this weekend (Sat. night) A white van was double parked outside of the house next door to me and my neighbor heard noises and went out to look - they had taken a steel pipe he had in his area way when he heard my neighbor he jumped in the van and sped off - it was too dark to get the plate number when he inspected the outside of his house he noticed our car window was broken. Thankfully nothing was taken (although I keep absolutely nothing in the car).
