Hi,
I need help.
My boyfriend proposed :shock:
We are very happily engaged

Then, I started looking for a place to have the wedding :?
Does anyone have any ideas?
We are trying to keep the budget low

Congratulations!

I went to a wedding at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (http://www.bsec.org/) and it was a nice spot. They have a yard and a couple of small rooms inside the building. The ceremony was outside in the rear yard with cocktails in the other part of the yard. Dinner + dancing was then set up inside. Not sure what the rates are like but you may want to check it out.

The Montauk Club (http://www.montaukclub.com/home.cfm) could be another option to look into.

I also know that people rent out the picnic house and the boat house in Prospect Park for events (http://www.prospectpark.org/plan/main.cfm?target=wedding).

Congrats! Besides budget, the number of guests is probably most important factor for us to help recommend places.

The big places in the neighborhood are BBG, Grand Prospect Hall, Picnic House in Prospect Park, and Boat House also in the park.

But there are smaller venues too, like Montauk Club or Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (which is where I got married if you have specific questions). Or, there are a few restaurants could probably handle a small wedding.

My brother's wedding was in the Prospect Park picnic house and it was awesome. Just be sure to note that although the place does have air conditioning, I've been to some summer events there when the A/C wasn't on for some reason and it got very hot. I would definitely look into that aspect of things if your event is going to be in the summer.

Subject: a funky alternative for a wedding

I know the Brooklyn Lyceum (www.gowanus.com) on the edge of Park Slope has hosted some. Kind of a raw (but enormous) space. Some extra costs for decorating/chairs, but probably much lower costs for the space itself. The guy who runs it is Eric Richmond.

You should check out some of the catering halls - they usually include everything you need, i.e., linens, centerpieces, etc. all for one price. I have seen some people pay more when they have to rent the hall, hire caterers, rent the linens & tables, pay for flowers, etc. it can get outrageous. Most catering halls charge a per person charge and it can be cheaper if you have buffet style, or if its on a Friday night or Sunday night, etc. Many catering halls in Brooklyn host Bridal Shows where they have various photographers, djs, bands and you can sample their food, check out the place, etc.
