edited: dealing with pet odors in carpets etc.
MOD NOTE: THIS WAS JUST A SPAMMER BUT YOUR TIPS ARE GREAT SO WE'RE KEEPIN' THE THREAD
I recently moved into a new apartment, and apparently the tenants before me had a pet. I think the landlord tried cleaning the carpet to remove the urine odor before I moved in. I didn’t notice it before, but the smell is now getting worse. I’ve tried a few products and nothing seems to work in getting rid of the smell. Does anyone know products that will get rid of the smell for good? I’ve looked into ]Store Bought Cleaners(spammy link removed), Pet Supply(spammy link removed), and even Replacing My Carpets(spammy link removed). Any suggestions?

Can you inspect the floor underneath? Look for black stains on wood flooring. this indicates that the piss has impregnated the wood. If I recall it might be possible to bleach the piss out but the best way is to sand or actually replace the hideous parts. Maybe the carpeting can be saved with a serious steam cleaning but the wood has to be repair first.

The best thing of all for animal urine is Nature's Miracle. You can steam clean all day, but that never takes the smell out. Nature's Miracle has enzymes that destroy the odor and gets right to the source. You can get it in pet or department stores. I even use it in my steam carpet cleaner with the regular cleaner and it works great.
Good luck. -
Are you sure of where the smell is coming from? Could it be from a neighbor's place?
Some other possibilities for nasty smells:
neighbor lives in filth
dead rodents in walls (is someone putting out poison for a rodent problem?)
rot/mold in walls/ceiling/floor from leaks (I had a place that had had major flooding before we moved in, from the apartment above and they just painted over the wet walls and it smelled bad.)
Good luck--it sucks to start off with problems in a new place. -

I had a problem similar to this except it was a cat or series of cats that pissed on a perfectly good couch...i tried everything to get the smell out but never heard of Nature's Miracle.
Good luck.
Where can you find that product? Seeming as i have a cat now and new furniture, it'd be a good idea to have that product on hand. -
Any pet store carries it. http://www.naturemakesitwork.com/home/index.php
In my opinion, it isn't as great as it used to be. I don't know if they changed the formula or what. It still works, but I don't know that it works as good as it did. -

Cool. thanks Beav...haha..when we moved in to our current place the previous tenants let us have their couch...which was in great condition..minus the piss smell that we discovered after we started movin shit in.

Now I have a leather couch...does this stuff work on leather too or is it a lost cause? -
I wouldn't use it on leather. Get a good leather cleaner for that.

unfortunately - nature's miracle won't work if any detergent has been applied ever. read the instructions. try alcohol - otherwise remove the carpet good luck

Ugh that sucks. And you know by the time summer rolls around it will be a thousand times worse. Good luck!

The trick with Nature's Miracle on rugs it to really soak it...down to the mattress pad.

You might want to get yourself a "black light" online. It will help you find exactly where the offensive urine spots are so that you can concentrate your efforts there.
If there were cats in the apartment, you'll want to clean from the floor level up to your hip level to cover all areas of possible spraying too.
I've used Nature's Miracle and like it but there are 2 other products that are also worth checking out.
Kennel Odor Eliminator: find it in catalogs online. a small bottle is about $9 and mixes about one ounce to a gallon of water.
Odor Destroyer: again find it in catalogs online. costs about $20 but is used in limousine service cars to clean up after vomitis etc.
With the Kennel Odor Elimator (KOE) you can also spray it directly once a week over the persistent spot.
P.S.: Slopers, did you know Nature's MIracle makes a cat litter? BEST EVER!
Unfortunately it has to be ordered online.
Hope this helps you - my apartment also had the smell problem and a combination of KOE; steam cleaning and persistence finally got it back to where it smells normal. Summertime sometimes brings the smell back to a small degree.
