  • damn linksys transferred me to 3 people then told me my router was out of warranty and wanted $30 for the support call. Why would I do that when i have you guys? ;-)

can somebody tell me how to secure my network again?
  • thanks, hitoriki. I realized after I wrote it that I have an N router and downed the settings to G
  • assuming you have a linksys right now (btw, check out my edit above)

Enter 192.168.1.1 in your web browser

    username: admin
    password: admin (or leave blank)

Other combinations i have seen is to leave the username blank and have just the password say admin
  • 697 up is all you're getting for "Turbo?"

    That's kinda lame.

What do they advertise as their upload speeds for Turbo? (assuming the usual YMMV). I'd call it a ripoff if their "Turbo" for uploads was a mere 768kbps up. Should be at least 1.5Mbps up or they are crooks.

For comparison, my Optimum Boost ($15 extra per month) in my home currently yields the following in an actual test just now:

    Last Result:
Download Speed: 29558 kbps (3694.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 5107 kbps (638.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

If your upload capabilities have any significant volatility at those lower data rates (around that 500kbs or lower) that would definitely affect VOIP call clarity to folks on the other end, as the quality of your voice signal being uploaded might exceed the intermittently weak upstream connection available and therefore degrade and decimate to coming through as spotty and choppy.

And as hitokiri pointed out, there may also be packet loss in addition to potentially slow+volatile upload speeds that may be involved.

    So check yer ups.
  • ok, i'm in the admin tool
    where do i set security?
  • ok, i see wireless security.

i think I want WEP, right?

what do i put in passphrase and Key fields (1-4)?

First off, all cable companies advertise "up to" speeds. the fine print stinks lol

Also, they do advertise 768. It's cable, not Fios. lol

I do believe they are still building the DOCSIS 3.0 version of their network as well.

But this is getting off topic.

I am trying to find out if it is TWC's problem or if it outside of TWC's network. (not how crappy the TWC deals are lol)
  • Flex -

you want WPA2 with TKIP security :)
  • ^ my cable tops 20Mbps FIOS, btw..(see my speed test results posted above)

And yeah, I included the usual YMMV regarding actual vs. advertised speeds.
  • i dont see your test result link
    just to speakeasy

    edit:

    nm lol

    you copy and pasted them
  • Heh, yep, inline text in the post. I shoulda bolded 'em, for those speeds.
  • hitokiri wrote: Flex -

thanks...but what do i enter into passphrase and keys 1-4?
  • nevermind....i made up a passphrase and WPA2 didn't ask me for keys 1-4 (WEP did)
  • remember to go into the administrative option to change your router password.

for added security (without going too deep into the setting), I would also change the max # of DHCP clients to 5 for your specific needs.

mac address filtering and whatnot would be a bit complicated to walk you through :)

jeff- yeah, opt does have nice speeds. TWC used to offer "Extreme", but i think they canned it almost immediately. Dunno why.
  • And also disable Wireless SSID Broadcast, if you see that as an available option (perhaps on the main wireless settings page).
  • That used to cause some problems with winxp back in the day lol

Jeff- now you made me start looking for faster speeds again. RoadRunner Extreme is like Loche Ness.

people at DSL reports say they have it....but you cant find it anywhere
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21651884-Road-Runner-Turbo-w-PowerBooster

I have called and have people say they dont offer it... but they do in a way.

Doc 3.0 has yet to roll out though. When ti does, NYC will be the first area to get it and thats when we will see some speed increases
  • "Your ISP may be using traffic shapers to degrade 3rd Party VOIP services from other providers like Vonage etc., hoping you'll dump them and sign up for your ISP's competing offering. "

I'm the director of digital communications for Time Warner Cable, just to be clear here.

And I can emphatically state that we don't manipulate third party VOIP data, ever.
  • OMG, I'm too dangerous mucking around here.

I am now on my air card because I've completely locked myself out of my network.

"my" network is now listed as "linksys" (not Flexi) and is locked

192.168.1.1 I can't get in now. Admin/Admin worked before, but isn't working now....nor is any other combo of admin + blank, etc.

I rebooted my router and still nothing.

    I'm going to cry
  • Jeff, that's fantastic (as opposed to Comcastic, lol) news.

And thanks for taking the time to pop in and clarify TWC's position in our little conversation here, very much appreciated.
  • Flexi - hit the reset button for 30 seconds and do it all again lol
  • flexi, when in doubt...

    1) Reset
    2) Config
    3) Rinse
    4) Repeat (if additional network body and shine desired)

yah, yah, yah (ok, seriously, Jeff, thanks for clarifying....I still hate TWC, but appreciate your response)...now help me get back in to my network.

    Watch out for flying laptops
