Have meeples will travel

I'd love to find some neighborhood folks who like board games (or video games, too) - I have boardgamegeek.com stuff in mind, but I like traditional (read: games you can get at Toys R Us) games, too. Looking for some folks to maybe meet up with somewhere, have a few drinks, and play some stuff meant for more than two people. Anyone?

Would be me and the boy; we're pushing 30 semi-homebody types with no delusions of coolness whose friends just all jumped ship to the burbs, FWIW. Not that they were ever into this stuff that much to begin with.

  • Check out NerdNYC's Recess event. It's an all day gaming event held this Saturday, Jan 31st in Brooklyn, right near BAM. It runs from noon-9pm.

    Info on Recess: http://www.nerdnyc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38762
    Game schedule: http://www.nerdnyc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=39177

I'll be running the Goa and Chicago Express tables.
  • Yes please! Me + wife if someone is counting.
  • Check out Dram in Park Slope: http://nymag.com/listings/bar/dram-shop/

They have some board games sitting around and big tables, perfect for scrabble. There are always some friendly people willing to jump into a game too.
  • There's also a Meetup.com group that meets twice-monthly, the NYC Boardgames Meetup. http://boardgames.meetup.com/23/

Our former venue closed in December, so we're testing out new places to meet. The next meetup will be held in a private room in a bar on the LES. Some of the members tend towards the unwashed nerd side of things, but there are plenty of nice people as well.
  • Thanks for the suggestions all. I walk past Dram Shop every day but have yet to go in, I'll have to check it out.

I actually am a member of that meetup group; I signed up a long time ago on a whim but haven't even really logged into the site since. Perhaps I'll check out the next meetup. Look for the two newbie fairly-washed semi-nerds. ;)

How many people are you expecting to show up at the Recess event? Is it mostly younger folks/older folks/mix? And is knowledge of the games (board, I'm not up for the RPGs) expected? I'm not personally familiar with any of the games on the list though I've read about several of them before. My games library is just stuff you can play with two, like Carcassonne, San Juan, Catan card game, O Zoo le Mio, etc.

Noah - I'll PM you. Thanks all!
  • Anyone into Illuminati (the old Steve Jackson game)? I have the original and the deluxe edition.
  • Illuminati is a great game!

As far as Recess goes, I'm not sure how many people will attend. I think they usually get in the neighborhood of 50+ people. As far as not being familiar with the games being played, all games will be taught before playing. It's assumed that none of the participants, except the person running the game, have played before. It's very newbie friendly. If you're already familiar with Carcassonne, San Juan, etc, you won't have any trouble learning the rules to whatever game you choose to join in on.

Also, in addition to the pre-selected games that will be played, there's also tables for open gaming, so you can bring your own games and try to find people to play with.
  • Also, age range tends to be mostly late-20's to mid-30's, with a fair number of 40+ folks, a few of whom bring their kids.
