Has anyone noticed their national grid bill being high? — Brooklynian

Has anyone noticed their national grid bill being high?

Hi, I just received my gas bill and its a 120 dollars! i usually use 60 dollars but last month we got a 100 dollar bill. i called and they said it was an actual reading (which it was) so I let it go. we have 3 people living here but now only TWO so how could it get HIGHER this month?! Is there some way to find out? I gonna read the freakin' meter myself and take a picture of it. I just need to know if my landlord would let me.

  • You pay for your own heat or is it cooking and/or hot water?
  • no i rent, its cooking and hot water.
  • I'm wondering if you might of been using your oven for heating during the recent cold spell? That's what doubles my gas bill in the winter. Is your hot water tank located in a uninsulated basement? That would add to the bill somewhat. More important, the relief valve on the tank might be defective, possibly pushing hot water out and keeping the gas running continually.

Not safe, not efficient, not a good idea. Buy a space heater.
  • they have a good website:

    http://www2.nationalgridus.com/

where you can compare billing for the last two years. I thought I was paying too much but it does not look like the $ per "therm" has gone up that much.

agreed. our landlord controls the heat so we picked up one of these little bastards from Lowes and it's amazing. Small & powerful but also really sturdy.
  • this is 2009 ,all our bills will do nothing but go up
  • hey spidey,if you have access to the meters you can just write the numbers down each month you read the meter from right to left
  • U R right, mine doubled. Same with my electric bill. We need to go back to the coal stoves, fire places & well water. Work in the day & sleep at night. They will find a way to charge us for free universal privileges.
What happen to our universal rights? Like water.
WHO IS THE GAS SUPPLIER AND WHO IS THE DELIVERY CHARGER?
WHY IS THERE 2 COMPANIES? I must've slept a news review.
And, isn't the Electric company & the gas company one now? I'm just a visitor on earth for a few yrs. Help the youth, somebody. My time is
    almost up.
  • FWIW I'm a very recently retired after 35+ years former National Grid employee:

    1) If you have used you stove for heat over the recent cold snap then that will account for any major increase in gas use & it's also VERY DANGEROUS so buy a safe space heater if you can afford it or put on some extra clothing.

    2) I just read someplace that even though natural gas spot prices may have gone down recently the gas marketers filled up their storage during the summer months at much higher prices and that what's being delivered to us now.

    3) If you live in Brooklyn then National Grid DELIVERS the gas to you but you most likely PURCHASE you gas from a separate marketer in most cases these days but you pay both costs on one National Grid bill. It should state on your bill who your GAS SUPPLIER is. You can still PURCHASE you gas from National Grid if you want but it's cheaper to shop around for a gas marketer. The NY State Public Service Commission (PSC) has been encouraging customers to do this for a few years now. Checkout their website for details on both gas & electric marketers.

    4) In Brooklyn, Con Edison is you electric deliverer and may or may not be buying you electricity for you these days.

    5) You can always call the utility company & ask them to check you meters if you think they are reading incorrectly.
