Franklin and Willoughby
We're considering an apartment here. I'm sorry if it's annoying to just pop in and post, but one of our main concerns is the safety of the neighborhood. Realizing that nowhere is crime-free, we just want to get a general sense of the neighborhood from people who live here.
So... Clinton Hill (I think this is considered Clinton Hill) how's the neighborhood?

Did you end up moving to Portal?
This area is not Clinton Hill, it's Bed-Stuy. (The realtors seem to call all of Bed-Stuy Clinton Hill.) This area of Bed-Stuy is infinitely better than Portal St and I think it is also much better than Eldert and Bushwick Ave. I would definitely consider it. It is important to remember that if you decide to move in, it is still Bed-Stuy and that it is only a block away from a large housing development. Thus, like in every other place in northern Brooklyn you should always be aware of your surroundings. -
It's Bed Stuy. The line is Classon although many people between Classon and Bedford consider themselves Clinton Hill. I am not sure why--own where you live!
NY Mag says Franklin, but the Encyclopedia of NY says Classon. And referenced here:

There is some crime, just like everywhere else. I have lived a few blocks away from there for almost 3 years, and I feel quite safe. Get to know your neighbors, get involved in the community, support your local gardens and parks and the like. I love the area.
cccc made good points as well. I concur with the post. -
Just to be clear, here is an official map from the New York City Dept of City Planning:

Anything East of Classon Ave. is part of Bed-Stuy. Nice try, real estate agents! -
Tennisfan, that's interesting. Thanks for posting it.

I live on Kent and consider myself in Clinton Hill.

Jtron, what happened to living on Portal? Not trying to ridicule, just genuinely curious.
I agree that this area is far better than Portal, though. -

I think this might have something to do with the answer:

Crime has picked up in all areas of Brooklyn in the past two years. To see how crime is in Brooklyn neighborhoods go to www.TheBrooklynPaper.com and go to 'Police Blotter'. This online paper comes out every Wednesday. There are archives of past Police Blotters as well. All in all, Brooklyn is a great melting pot and a pretty safe place to live and Franklin & Willoughby is safe; my mom used to live on that block across the street from the school. Peace! -
Wait for the weather to break if possible and then walk around on a Friday or Saturday night after ~10PM and see if you feel safe. Watch the public housing areas as they tend to have gangs & drug dealing issues. Talk to a cop if possible to get their $.02 but they tend to see lots of crime on a daily basis so they will most likely be overly negative. Reading the police blotter is a good idea.
