A *good* Car Service?

I use Evelyn, and haven't had any trouble yet. What happened?
-
Arecibo. It's basically the only one I use.
-
Cheers on 7th in Park Slope will pick you up in PH, and they're very reliable.
-
Evelyn is my go-to car service and has been for years. Aericibo is my back up. If you want something fancy and pricey, try Legends on 7th av.
-
Another vote for Arecibo. They seem to treat their drivers pretty well, which makes for a generally more pleasant vibe.
-
i use international. their cars are a bit beat down but they always come quickly, the drivers are nice, and the prices are fair

Nicer than average cars. Rarely will they tell you they don't have a car in the area. I even call them from Sheepshead bay when I'm out there visiting friends. -

I use International too... they are really fast, I have to be downstairs before I call... and their drivers now where they are going, I don't have to give them directions. -
Boo International. They seem incapable of finding my place (right around the corner from them), or of keeping an appointment. I was late to the Bauhaus concert because of them. :x
One time after I called them the second time, I got this from the driver (my response follows):
"This a new building?"
"It's three years old."

Legends. They have a three buck coupon in the Valpak. Only reason I open it.
-
Arecibo is the only one that I use... I used to work near their dispatch center, so it was really convenient, but the service has been great, so I've never had a need or want to try someplace else.

Eh, I'd rather not go into specifics. Maybe I judged too harshly. Just wasn't impressed with their service. But from the sound of it, I should try them again. -

evelyn is always going to cost a few bucks more than arecibo, fyi.
also, my favorite car service when no car services are answering the phone/the phone is busy is monaco. I just go and sit in their dispach center until a car shows up. it can sometimes take a few minutes but I've gotten cars from them during the blizzard last month and at midnight on a saturday (a notoriously awful time to get a car). -
I used to live less than a block from Evelyn and called them every time. They always had me waiting for at least 10-20 minutes (even though they said it would be 2). I started calling Aricebo and my experience with them has been much better. Also, Evelyn cars are allegedly not insured (I have a friend who got in an accident with one of them).

Anybody got a phone number for Aricebo? Thx. -

Just don't leave anything in an Arecibo car. My husband's cell phone dropped out of his pocket and they were so unhelpful getting in touch with the driver. It took about a week for us to get the bill from AT&T showing that this guy had called the Dominican Republic and charged up about $120 worth of calls (we canceled the service on Day 2 when the folks at the Arecibo office wouldn't help us). They are quick with their cars but very dishonest, I think.

I like Arecibo, and I often use Evelyn as a backup, but my wife has noticed the past few mornings that both are completely swamped mornings (she wiped out her knee and isn't too happy walking on this ice..).
So has anyone been getting rides into the city from PH, and if so, who have you been using? FTM, what do you pay with your usual company to get into to Manhattan?
I'll save the best-route-to-JFK for a different thread. -
I know Teddyballgame was looking for some numbers, and there aren't many in this thread, so...
Eastern
718-499-6227
Evelyn
718-230-7882
Arecibo
718-783-6465
Plus two not mentioned in this thread yet:
Pacific Express
718-488-0000
This one is located near my old place; nice guys usually and the cars are in decent shape.
Continental
718-499-0909
They often have cars when nobody else does. -
When Aricebo started bugging me
(too busy, or charging way too much extra for bringing a dog in the car)
Eleventh Street Car Service (at 11th and Fifth Ave)
718-499-3800
11th St is also the only not-crazy-expensive place that will deal with your incoming flight from the airport
(and not screw it up.
) -
There is also Family Car Service on 5th Ave but I dont know the number

Family is on Fourth Ave near Carroll St

I called Arecibo based on the recommendations here and they were fast, friendly, and relatively inexpensive (16 bucks to the East Village). Thanks everyone.
