Gimme the scoop on Freddy's
Subject: Gimme the scoop on Freddy's
So I'm a wanna-be comic. Bascially, I do imaginary stand-up routines in my head, but I'm scared shitless to do it in real life. But then I hear that Freddy's has Monday open mic comdey night. Freddy's is small. A block away from my crib. Intimidation level is low. I'm working up the balls.
So what can you tell me about Freddy's open mic comedy scene? Is the crowd easily entertained? Harsh critics? Big turn out? Cricket noises?
Let me know, neighbors.

It's not an open mic. Pat O'Shea runs the show, and most of the performers tend to be experienced comics who've appeared/written for the late night shows, the Onion, etc.
That said, there are usually under 10 audience members, and if you're funny and can show Pat a tape of you performing, he'd likely let you do your thing.

Outside of Freddy's there are many open mic nights in the city. You might want to go to Comedy Night at Freddy's and talk to some of the performers about possible venues.

That sound you hear? PHeightsGirl's dreams of becoming a comic crashing and burning.
Back to the drawing board... -
Don't say that. Just find yourself an open mic night. Seriously, the comics who do perform at Freddy's are super-friendly and will talk biz with you all night, especially if you buy one a beer.

No. It just won't work. The bar has to be close enough to my apartment so that I can have three quick shots of hard liquor and not have the long train commute into the city kill my buzz.

Damn, I'm getting involved.
I got killer material, you oughta hear my Andy Rooney impersonation. -
PHeightsGirl,
Why not slip a fifth of whiskey into your coat and surreptitiously take a few nips before going on stage? Sometimes a portable bar is the best kind. -

That's a beautiful idea. But usually somewhere in between 7th avenue and whatever stop in Manhattan, I lose my nerve. I think it commits suicide by jumping off the Manhattan bridge.

There are tons of opportunities for new comedians in this city, but you sort of have to want it bad enough to go to a *little* effort, ya know.

Sorry, effort is the wrong word. And I do want it bad, but not bad enough to defecate in my panties. -
I know just what you mean about suicidal nerve. Here's an idea that might work: while you're still nervy and ready to go, tell some people what you're doing and ask them to come. That way, when your nerve bellyflops, you'll still go because you know your friends are counting on you.
I know it's sounds corny, but it's worked for me in the past. -

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound rude. I was trying to soften it a little bit with the smiley and all!
I agree that you should just go to the Freddy's comedy night sometime and strike up a conversation with some of the performers. Maybe they can suggest really good, welcoming places for first-timers. -
I'll admit, I do need to go somewhere and just try it. I need to know two things:
1.) Is performing a skit in front of strangers really as scary as I think it is?
AND
2.) Am I funny?
Cause, well, I think I'm funny, dammit. And a lot of other people think I'm funny. But...am I really funny? -

Well, I don't know the answer to the second question because I don't know you, but I can tell you from my own experience that #1 just depends on the audience. If you get a warm, receptive, friendly audience, you can get a little taste of how great it feels to get a good laugh out of something you've said, see whether you like doing it, and also start to get some sense of what material works and what doesn't. Talking to some more experienced comedians about where to find the best audiences for a newbie would really help with that.

This was kinda a rhetoric post to myself. But thanks for your stab at answering, A666!

Cafe 400 in Crown Heights (where the CH happy hour was last night) appears to have an open mic stand-up comedy night. I forgot which day it is, but I can get you details at the next CH happy hour.
Howdy, Stranger!
