Moving from Atlanta — Brooklynian

Moving from Atlanta

Hello All,

I am moving in june to brooklyn and I was curious to know what is the average amount for bills. (ie. water, electric, cable) I have done some research as far as where to live, which will most likely be greenpoint/williamsburg. Just from reading, it sounds to be the safest for myself. (30/f) If anyone can lend some extra help with info, that would be greatly appreciated. Right now I spend $2500 a month on rent/bills. Thanks!

  • Would you be living alone or would you be getting a roommate? Regardless, if that's what you're spending now, you'll definitely be able to get by with that kind of budget here. I'm in Greenpoint and granted I have two roommates, pay significantly less than that with rent and bills (even my cell phone) combined.

I will be living alone. I'm planning a trip in March to check things out, anywhere you recommend I should look at? (apts) Also, what can you tell me about having a car? Thanks for your quick response!
  • There are safer parts of Brooklyn like Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill (safer than Park Slope, Brooklyn Height and any other area of Brooklyn according to the cops across tlhe street from me in CG). But the areas you are targeting are not unsafe, necessarily.
  • The area she's targeting is not at all unsafe, in fact the 94th precinct (Greenpoint and into the Northside) year after year reports among the lowest rates of violent crime in NYC.

As for having a car, you may well find you'd rather not. You'll find public transportation to be unlike anything you've experienced in any other US city; available 24 hours a day. But you'll also find car insurance more expensive than you've ever experienced, and parking restrictions that mean even if you don't drive every day you'll have to move the car regularly.

Utility bills are pretty hard really to put a handle on without knowing how big a place you will have, and how it will be heated, etc. There are a lot of buildings here, for example, with steam heat so your electricity bill will be just lights, TV, stuff like that. In any case, ConEd in NYC does have one of the highest, if not the highest, rates in the country. Phone bills will be pretty much like anywhere else; expect cable to be close to $100 for a standard package.
  • I believe the main difference between here and other cities is the heating. Some apartments have oil heat that everyone in the building divides together, and that ends up being pretty cheap. But some people have central air, then the heating usually is gas and is paid individually. That can be expensive. My co worker had to pay 300 dollars for just 1 month of gas heat this winter.

Well between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Williamsburg is the obvious hot spot. But I love living in Greenpoint. It's got tons of great places to go out for food, drinks, coffee, ect. Easy access to the G train, L train and tons of buses. I live on McGolrick Park and it's super quiet at night which I've really been loving since I moved in.
  • Thanks so much for the help! If I have more questions, I will definately come here...Thanks again!
  • Keep your Georgia plates, license, and insurance if you want to save a lot of money. I mean thousands. Important to have paper bills sent to a Georgia address. Everybody pays on line anyway. Federal tax return also from Georgia. Don't worry about NYS return. When I first moved to NYC I was amazed at how many Vermont tags were on cars driving through Harlem. I didn't think there were any Blacks in Vermont let alone all of them constantly visiting NYC.

LOL, sounds good but I will be going to college and I prefer the lower tuition. In order for that, I'll have to become a resident. Which causes me having to change everything over..blah blah blah. If I wasn't, I def would take your advice! ;0)
  • I admire your Integrity
