would we be having this conversation if the guy who rang your bell "sounded white." The Son of Sam probably "sounded white." The Preppy Killer sho nuff "sounded white." What if the Unibomber rang your bell at 4am? He probably would've sounded white, too. Shall I go on about all the dangerous people who didn't sound black, but white. Be very careful when a sinister sounding white person rings your bell at 4am, saying "Hey Dude...can you buzz me in." Doublelock your doors and call the police, pronto.
someone really needs to consider picking their battles a little more carefully.

Seriously, you've got some chip on that shoulder. Ease up.
  • Oddly, when it comes to race, we've ALL got a chip on our shoulder.
  • Dear JamesOnDean,

In retaliation for saying that the person buzzing you sounded "black" I'm going to let anyone into my building who buzzes my apartment. Take that, you racist jerk! I LIKE crime!

    Hrmph,
    Alafairnadia
  • Im afraid of rich black women with loud yorkies :):)

Sorry RBG I couldn't resist that one. :D:D

    To play devil's advocate though:
JamesOnDean wrote: The person had what sounded to be a black male voice, was not drunk or slurred, but was being purposefully unintelligible.
You'd have given just as much information writing: "The person was not drunk or slurred, but was being purposefully unintelligible." Frankly, anyone mumbling and ringing your bell at 4am is a little suspect.

AR wrote: [quote=PHeightsGirl][quote=amyskittysitting]How did someone trying to break into a building turn into a race issue?? Since this has gotten quite off track, I wanted to thank JamesOnDean for spreading awareness.

I believe it turned into a race issue when the man was described as black from the jump.

That's probhably the terminology the NYPD uses, so chill people! If the suspect had had any other accent/ tone James would have reported that.
This board is way too #$%#$%&!! sensitive. Fight crime not each other.

    AR: Here's your chip.

Of course anyone ringing at that hour is suspect.

I'm going to admit that in a conversation about race, I was wrong to mention that as an identifying characteristic. But my intention was not to have a conversation about race. My first instinct in an emergency/safety situation is to share all the information I have. The sound of the voice was one piece of information I had, therefore I gave it. Had I used a different turn of phrase, people might not have assumed I was trying to imply anything beyond my intended purpose, which was to describe the guy who tried to gain unlawful entry into our building.

I would apologize if I had tried to imply anything else, but I didn't. I'll admit error in my choice of words, but I really don't have enough sympathy for hotheads to apologize.

  • This is all so ridiculous. Who in their right mind would buzz in a complete stranger at 4AM, let alone any other time. Unless, of course, they'd actually ordered food...

and there is the critical part of this - does any place deliver food at 4 a.m.? cause there are times when I'd like some food at 4 a.m. and have no idea who to contact, other than my local bodega or albaz.
  • Alafair and MC! You both highlight how ridiculous that last debate became. I'd love to get a food delivery at 4am. This board never ceases to amaze me---we go from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. And I love how people preface their responses to me with "considering your history here......blah,blah,blah" I was thinking about hitting the winetasting event, but now I'm too scared. I guess I'll just stay at home with my vicious Yorkie and patrol the halls for strangers of all colors...and voices.... 8)

    BTW, there's a 3 bedroom 2 bath available in my bldg...599K....
  • the wine tasting is fun. you should come!
  • People,

    I am black
    And I am a male.
I wasn't offended by the description.

I dont buzz in male, black, unintelligible people in to my building at 4am.
I also recognize if someone sounds "black" or is they speak with a certain dialect that is associated with black people or a certain socio-economic background, or people from New York, Alabama or otherwise.

I'm not sure if noticing that alone makes one racist.
In fact, I know it doesn't.

We can never have a realistic, intelligent dialogue on race, if each time someone brings up noticable, obvious, apparent, differences, we pretend to be offended, and shout them down.

SOMETIMES: Pretending that there is no differnce can be as damaging as emphasizing that there is a difference.

Just be honest and chill out with the PC stuff.
    Dont buzz the person in.
  • Well, I am black and a woman and I wasn't offended by what James wrote, but I do think that the potential whatever who was ringing the bell at 4am is not any more notable for having a black male voice and everyone being on high alert for some black voiced random in the middle of the night, instead of any old random, is a more than a little stupid.

    *buzz buzz*

    me: who's there?
    them: landshark
me: hrm. doesn't sound black to me. c'mon in!

(yes, I know, the skit doesn't go that way. whatEVER)
  • Wow, this thread got soooo off target it almost became a "blame the victim" ( although there wasn't really a victim). Why is it that in Manhattan, people are past this and can and do say , " you know the white guy, or the black guy, or the purple guy, if they don't know the person, " Why is Brooklyn so sensitive to this? My neighbors aren't, it's only the PC patrol that is...

    :?

You're so far off-base that it isn't even funny. (Then again, no, it is actually.)
  • I calls em likes I sees em and there have been some pretty dumb
(judgemental) posts in this thread. James was trying to alert people of what was going on , even if he had a slight faux paus , this got way out of hand. If fact no one has really talked about the original topic.
  • Well, there's nothing to say about the original topic.

"Some guy buzzed my door really late at night, guys." "Okay, James."

It's pretty cut and dry, and thankfully was the best case scenario. I mean, everyone will now be on alert for fake deliveries from guys who sound black. Okay. But, that's one of those common sense things -- not opening your door if you're not expecting anyone at an absurd hour.
  • You are right on target with your last post C..
This entire disscussion was futile. It was a " heads up" I think, and it got turned into a racism forum, why?
  • Candicissima has a point, which is there's really nothing to say about my original post, which is why I started out saying "File under obvious."

    Unbuzz you door, yo.

That's the way we roll at DH! :?
  • Look out for crazy Norwegian males buzzing at 4am. Although, I'm probably just looking to bum a beer.
  • My six year old son and his schoolmates all openly describe each other by skin color, i.e. "so-and-so, my brown-skinned friend" or "so-and-so, who has white skin." I didn't teach him this, they taught this to each other and all the kids hug when they get to school in the morning.

Here's to acting our ages (whatever they may be).

This is a way-outside-of-the-box approach to fighting gentrification.
  • One time I let this Indian-sounding dude into my building and he beat me senseless with a bag of dead pigeons samosas. They were from Joy, which is definitely better than that place on Vanderbilt.

    Lock you doors indeed.

(DailyHeights overdose. Wires crossed. Synapses misfiring.)
  • ok
this entire thread, off topic or no, made me laugh SO hard.
i was in a pissy mood and now feel much better
    so thanks!!!
  • Muk wins... as usual.
  • this is all very interesting.
    Consider this scenario:

It was you buzzer that rang at 4am.

Let's say the person got in, commited a crime and got away.
The police arrive the next day and question everyone in the building.
they say they know this oerson gained access by randomly ringing the buzzer.

When the police ask any of you if there is anything you can tell them about who this erson might be. Considering you only heard the voice, what could you tell the police.

Let's see, according to many of you posing here your answer would be:

"Officer, I couln't tell you anything by his voice. He could be anyone on this planet."

    or

    "Officer,
The person had what sounded to be a black male voice, was not drunk or slurred, but was being purposefully unintelligible.
Acknowledging the only clue you have (sound), and the fact that that clue leads to a description of race, does not make one racist.

And in fact, that trait, the only trait given in this "audio" attempted entry, is a notable one that can be described to anyone. Anything else is simply PC garbage.
